Insight, opinion, humour and controversy – these five have it all

As the scale of English football has grown, so too has the media landscape which covers it.

There is nearly as much interest in what the pundits who cover the game have to say than the game itself.

There is the good, the bad, and the ugly of this particular aspect of football coverage.

But in this particular article, the Coral News Team identifies five of the best pundits you should always take the time to listen to.

Kevin Kilbane

The former Everton and Sunderland winger generally appears on Match Of The Day 2.

And when he does, the programme becomes instantly more watchable.

Hugely insightful across the spectrum of the game in the UK and Europe, the Irishman rarely descends to empty clichés.

Alan Shearer

Unlike the majority of his contemporaries, Shearer has actually upped his game.

Since making his punditry bow the Newcastle United legend has evolved into a bastion of proper, forthright opinion.

His recent takedown of Phil Neville was top-quality viewing.

Roy Keane

You may only get a glimpse of the ex-Manchester United captain on ITV’s Champions League and Europa League coverage, but that’s all you need.

Generally incendiary, Keane never shies away from offering a controversial opinion.

His disdain for modern football is generally always entertaining, too.

Jamie Carragher

Some wondered if Sky Sports’ flagship football show Monday Night Football could get any better, but with Carragher’s inclusion, it did.

The ex-Liverpool defender’s edgy wit and intelligence always makes for entertaining viewing.

However, it’s his no-nonsense opinion and analysis that is so compelling.

Gary Neville

The Manchester United legend had impressed so much since becoming a pundit he was handed a managerial job at Valencia.

Even though it didn’t work out at the Mestalla, Neville is still regarded as having revolutionised modern punditry.

His tactical breakdowns of games are simply superb. It’s like watching a true master at work.

The addition of Carragher has taken Neville to a new level, too. So much so that their double act has now become the face of Sky Sports football.

The ex-England assistant has stated he’ll likely not go into management again. It would be a shame if so, but all the better for TV viewers.

Big match previews, betting tips and transfer news – Coral has got it all.
