3 ways Davinson Sanchez is improving Tottenham

The £42m signing has impressed so far

Tottenham Hotspur have conceded the least amount of goals in the Premier League in both of the last two seasons. It didn’t seem like their defence needed much improvement but they signed Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez for a club record fee of £42m.

The 21-year-old has started in the middle of the back three in the wins over Everton and Borussia Dortmund. He’s immediately looked comfortable and his arrival could make Spurs an even better team.

The Coral News Team have looked at three ways the young ace is already making a difference:

Pace

Eric Dier regularly played as the central defender in the back three last season and he did very well there. However, he does prefer to play in midfield. And a back three of Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen isn’t the quickest.

Sanchez looks like a tremendous athlete. His teammates had enough confidence in him to leave him one-v-one against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at times.

Aubameyang is one of the fastest strikers around but Sanchez rose to the challenge. He could keep pace with him in a way that Tottenham’s other defenders wouldn’t have been able to.

It was the Colombia international’s first ever appearance in the Champions League and he looked totally unfazed.

More freedom for Alderweireld and Vertonghen

Alderweireld and Vertonghen are two of the best ball-playing defenders around. Their technique and ability to pick a pass adds another dimension to Spurs’ attacking play.

Having Sanchez and his speed as the last line of defence gives the two Belgians more licence to get involved going forward.

Tottenham like to hem sides into their own half by playing at a high tempo. Alderweireld and Vertonghen can back up the play to keep the waves of pressure coming.

Change of style

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are excellent at pressing from the front but a different approach will be needed in some games.

Sanchez‘s reading of the game, athleticism and composure will all be very useful when Spurs have to sit back and defend in a deep line.

He made six clearances against Dortmund, highlighting his ability to sense danger and deal with it.

Spurs had to spend big to sign Sanchez and the early signs are that it could be money well spent.
