Weekend in pictures: Bolt ends with defeat
100m king beaten in London
Sports fans saw the return of domestic football, with the Championship and below getting underway in England, while all major divisions in Scotland played game one. The Community Shield between Chelsea and Arsenal at Wembley means we’re also less than a week away from the new Premier League campaign.
It’s great to have the beautiful game back on our screens, but there’s no doubt it all played second fiddle behind the main sporting news of the weekend, Usain Bolt’s final race. The Jamaican has transformed the image of athletics in recent times, and bowed out at the World Championships in London – his last ever race.
Here’s how that went, and what else made headlines from the world of sports in Coral’s weekend in pictures…..

Justin Gatlin stunned sports fans everywhere on Saturday evening when winning gold in the World Athletics Championship 100m final, beating fans’ favourite Usain Bolt into the bronze medal position. In Bolt’s final race, the Jamaican finished behind American pair Gatlin and Christian Coleman.

The weekend of upsets didn’t spare horse racing followers either, with Lancelot Du Lac winning the Stewards Cup at Glorious Goodwood off a bumper 25/1 SP. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the champion edged out Aeolus in the final strides, with favourite Sir Dancelot way back in 22nd.

Arsene Wenger continued his impressive recent form at Wembley when guiding his Arsenal side to a win over Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday. The Blues went ahead on 46 minutes through Victor Moses, Sead Kolasinac netting an equaliser late in the day. That forced the match to penalties, The Gunners winning 4-1.

England’s Jonny Bairstow came agonisingly close to smashing a fourth test century vs South Africa at Old Trafford. The Yorkshireman was caught out LBW by Keshav Maharaj on 99 as England were all out for 362 on the second day.

There was one fairytale ending in London over the weekend as South African Luvo Manyongo won long jump gold in front of a packed out Olympic stadium. Manyongo, a reformed drug addict, capped an inspirational comeback story with an 8.48m leap that was good enough for the top prize.
