Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal set to battle for the US Open

The two icons have never met at Flushing Meadows

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s legendary rivalry stretches 13 years and 37 matches. They’ve faced each other in thrilling contests all over the world, but surprisingly, never at the US Open. That looks likely to change this year, as several potential winners are struggling with injury or form.

Federer and Nadal both come into 2017’s final Grand Slam on the back of a resurgent year. The Swiss hadn’t won a Slam since 2012. Nadal’s last major win came in the 2014 French Open.

Now Federer has won this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon title, while Nadal celebrated his 10th French Open title.

The US Open would make it a clean sweep of Slams for the pair.

Andy Murray is expected to be involved but he’s struggled with his own injury problems since Wimbledon.

That could give young players like Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios an opportunity to challenge, but Federer and Nadal will dominate attention in the men’s draw.

At 36-years-old, Federer is five years older than Nadal and he missed the Cincinnati Masters earlier this month with a back problem. Despite that, he’s the favourite at 6/4 with Coral. The veteran has won five titles in New York and if the roof closes the indoor conditions favour his game.

Nadal is slightly behind at 11/4. The two-time US Open champion hasn’t got past the fourth round since 2013, but the past year has shown that you can never count him out.

Unless there’s a big shock, the stage is set for another fascinating chapter in this great rivalry at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
