Where’s your money in the big one?

The eagerly anticipated middleweight match-up between Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez has been announced, sending followers of the fight game into overdrive. Coral traders wasted no time in setting up camp, and have GGG marked as 4/6 jolly in the early betting, against Canelo’s 5/4.

There’s much work to be done in both camps before the agreed 16th September fight date, Las Vegas the battleground, but that won’t stop punters getting in early to secure the betting value. Click now to have your say on the winner of the year’s biggest fight.

Brook v Khan is one fans want to see in 2017.

Fight fans finally get their wish

Fans’ wait for this one finally ended in early May when promoters chose the end of Saul Alvarez’s win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr to make the announcement. Billed as a Mexican war, the bout with 54-fight veteran Chavez failed to live up to the pre-fight hype. Canelo went through the motions, but was rarely seen out of first gear to get the better of his man. Disgruntled supporters, feeling let down on the night, accused the beaten boxer of merely turning up for the pay-day.

The real drama happened after the final bell at the T-Mobile Arena that night however. Looking like a hastily arranged scene from WWE wrestling, Alvarez was asked if he would fight Triple G – cue flashing lights, ring walk music and Golovin emerging from backstage to meet his September opponent face-to-face in the ring. The bout was agreed and a date set.

All a bit too Hollywood for the liking of true boxing fans, but we got the message. So, who is your winner? There’s no surprise to see Golovkin put forward as early favourite in the betting, he brings a perfect 37 fight record, 33 of those wins coming by knockout. That 89 per cent KO average is amongst the most devastating in boxing history.

After brutally stopping Amir Khan, Canelo will next face Liam Smith.

We’re in line for a slugfest

Will Mexican hard-man Canelo prove just another stat on that CV in the summer? It’s hard to believe he’s still only 26-years-old, he seems to have been around the top of the sport for years, but Alvarez brings plenty to the table to worry Golovkin’s unbeaten record.

The underdog now goes 49-1-1, his sole loss coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jnr in 2013, courtesy of a majority points decision. He has won four of his seven starts since by KO, including over British duo Amir Khan in six and Liam Smith in nine. 34 KO wins of his own means we could be set for a shoot-out in Vegas, both punchers gambling their legacy.
