Jim Crowley talks us through his weekend rides

I am delighted to have won the King George Stakes on board Battaash. It was the first time riding the horse in a race and I said to Charlie afterwards, it was like riding a motorbike. You are almost a passenger. You just have to conserve his energy and speed because he wants to give it to you early.

I really think on Good To Firm ground he could be even better. He took me to the front at the 2f pole and once I pressed the button, I was surprised at how well he picked up on this ground. If it came up slow in the future, you would not duck the race with him so we’ve learnt that he is very versatile. I am really happy to ride a big winner for the boss. He has put a lot of faith in me so it nice to repay him. We can now look at some big races like the Nunthorpe.

2.25 Goodwood – Jaameh

He stays well this horse. I won on him at Newmarket but I have not been back on him since. He ran in the Northumberland Plate but was disappointing. Mark Johnston’s horses are in good form. He is drawn in stall six which is a good draw so I would be hopeful of a nice run.

3.30 Goodwood – Raucous

I was third on this horse in this race 12 months ago where he ran a cracking race. He stays 7f so if they go off very fast, that could help. I think he has a good chance. I would be hoping to finish in the top 6, at the very least. He is drawn 26 but the far rail is the place you want to be but we will wait and see as it all depends on where the pace is.

Raucous

4.10 Goodwood – Power Of Darkness

This is an unraced horse but Marcus Tregoning really likes him. He is drawn in stall 1 which is great unless you miss the kick and find yourself trapped in. Hopefully he can run well on his debut.

4.45 Goodwood – Taamol

He won a Listed race at Newmarket on slow ground. He ran ok last time and I think he has a chance here of winning for the second time in three starts.

Sunday

2.55 Dusseldorf – Megera

I am heading across to Dusseldorf for the German Oaks on Sunday. I don’t know anything about this filly but she is trained by one of the leading trainers in Germany. My agent got the call about the booking so it is a fantastic ride to pick up. Winning Group Ones on different horses helps and it is nice to get the opportunity abroad in a big race.

Jim Crowley

Jim Crowley began his flat racing career as an amateur before switching to National Hunt racing, where he landed approximately 300 winners. He then returned to the flat to ride for sister-in-law Amanda Perrett. After years of hard work, Jim was finally rewarded when we won the 2016 Stobart Flat Jockey Championship with an incredible 148 winners. That was followed by a lucrative retained partnership with leading owner Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum, for whom he is the no.1 jockey.
