Shining the spotlight on Chester

Sunday’s horse racing schedule doesn’t give us the glamour of Glorious Goodwood, but there’s plenty to keep Coral punters busy, with UK and Irish meetings scheduled at Chester, Market Rasen and Galway.

We aim to brighten up your weekend with a winner, and our race-by-race selections from Chester should point you in the direction of a profit. Pick out your favourites and club them together in a big price multiple. Fancy something a bit stronger? Read on for our NAP of the day.

Snooker Jim’s progress to continue

A seven-race card from the Roodee gets started at 2.05pm, with the early going described as good to soft. We waste no time getting in with our bet of the day, our strongest play lining up in the first. A novices’ chase run over the seven furlong trip, there are certainly higher quality races taking place this weekend, but we think we’ve picked the winner nonetheless.

Of the eight runners market down, Snooker Jim is the one for us. Steph Hollinshead sends out this promising two-year-old colt, who has been coming along nicely in the early part of his career. Eighth over course and distance back in June, that was a decent eye-opener to what lay ahead, and he gave a good account of himself that day, looking past the bare result.

Backers want to see an improved start

He showed signs of inexperience in the opening stages, but finally knuckled down to the task at hand and we’ll take more from the way he finished the race than how he started it. With that breeze around Chester under his belt, he moved on to end fourth of nine at Ascot, upsetting the market when going off as a 50/1 no hoper. Snooker Jim led on the approach for home before being passed inside the final furlong, but the improvement was startling.

We’re expecting to see the selection come again on Sunday. He isn’t in with anything that’s going to cause alarm, but we’re needing a better start. Snooker Jim has been poor in the opening strides of both previous goes, and to give himself the best chance of doing something worthwhile here, he must cut that out. Connections would’ve been working to fix that flaw at home, and we’ll give him a chance.
