The Big 4 might not dominate this time

The men’s tennis circuit has been dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray for more than a decade. The “Big Four” have won 45 of the last 50 major singles titles. That incredible run stretches from the 2005 French Open all the way to this year’s Wimbledon.

It’s a level of dominance that the game has never been seen before. This year’s US Open could offer young hopefuls a chance to make a name for themselves though.

Five of the world’s top 11 men’s players have been ruled out of the tournament with injuries. Djokovic and Murray are both missing. Federer is taking part at Flushing Meadows but he might not be in peak condition. A back injury forced him to skip the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago.

With so many stars missing, Coral News has the lowdown on three players looking to take full advantage.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev is the youngest player in the world’s top ten. He’s climbed up to number six at only 20-years-old. The giant German beat Djokovic and Federer in finals to win two Masters Series titles this summer.

The promise is clearly there but Zverev is yet to make his mark on a Grand Slam and hasn’t got past the fourth round of the US Open before. This year’s draw could be the perfect opportunity to change that.

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has all the talent to triumph at a Grand Slam. It’s just a question of consistency and commitment. At his best the Australian can be a joy to watch. He plays with aggression and flair. And his serve is a very powerful weapon.

He managed to beat Nadal on the way to the Cincinnati Masters final recently. It won’t be a surprise if he makes the headlines in New York. Will it be for the right or wrong reasons though?

Jared Donaldson

It’s been a long time since the US had a male player near the top of the world rankings. There are hopes that Jared Donaldson could change that. The 20-year-old is currently ranked at number 51.

He moves around the court incredibly quickly and is strong from the baseline. Donaldson will continue to improve too. But he could still be one to keep an eye on right now.
