Traders expect a winning comeback

Selby was ruled out for weeks after suffering a freak injury at home. The 34-year-old told fans he dropped a piece of glass on his foot during practice. We’re not sure just what he was practicing. The result was a broken toe, with Selby forced to sit on the sidelines, wearing protective footwear. He assures followers he is back to full health, and Coral traders certainly appear to believe him.

Looking on the bright side, it didn’t happen at the busiest time of year, meaning he hasn’t missed too much snooker through that mishap. Selby faces Neil Robertson on Thursday afternoon, and is odds-on to get the desired result, 1/2 the current price. There’s a bit more for backers to get excited about in the outright market, 3/1 chalked up in midweek.

Judd Trump

Trump the value play

Next in line is Judd Trump, who goes as second favourite, but there’s enough of a price there to get supporters excited. There may only be eight players at this invitation only event, but Trump appears to have the jump on most of them in terms of sharpness. The leading names won’t have experienced too much by way of competitive snooker of late, meaning we could see signs of rust in the early matches.

That’s not a danger Trump backers have to worry about, with The Juddernaught seen earlier in July at the World Cup, where he gave a great account of himself. England reached the final there, Judd and Barry Hawkins eventually beaten by China. That warm-up should pay off this week, and we make Trump the Hong Kong Masters value pick at 4/1. There’s each-way terms of 1/3 the odds 1-2, for those sitting on the fence, but if you’re after a bit more for your stake money, why not call the finalists? Trump vs Selby is 11/2.
