Spurs hoping to go one better

Tottenham Hotspur will play their home matches at Wembley this term, during construction of their new stadium, and fans will be hoping they can perform on the hallowed turf to improve on last season’s second place finish in the Premier League.

The inevitable tug of war over star striker Harry Kane is taking place, with Manchester United wanting last season’s golden boot winner – but he’s just one on a long list of stars targeted by Jose Mourinho, including Ronaldo, Bale and Neymar, so fans shouldn’t worry. We look at three ways to back Tottenham for glory this year…..

Champions League tips for Tuesday November 22

Spurs to improve a place

Tottenham were impressive last season, finishing second behind Chelsea with a record of 26 wins, eight draws and four defeats. That means they lost fewer games than any of their rivals – Chelsea slipped up five times – but draws cost them dear. Fans will take plenty of encouragement from that however, as there isn’t an awful lot to improve upon. Chelsea were dominant, but The Blues now have Champions League football to content with. The Premier League has five sides in Europe’s elite this term, meaning we should be set for one of the closest title races in memory. If Spurs can keep hold of Kane, they have a real chance of winning the title, but our boys have written them off at 8/1, sitting behind Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea. There’s real value in that one.

Fans would welcome an extra trip to Wembley

Followers of Spurs won’t get sick of the sight of Wembley in the coming months, and they’ll be hoping for a few more ‘home’ matches at the national stadium in the League Cup and FA Cup. They already boast eight FA Cup winners medals throughout history, but haven’t lifted the famous title since 1991. That will stick in the throat of everyone connected to the club, especially with bitter rivals Arsenal winning three of the last four. Beaten in the semi-finals last year by Chelsea, goals from Kane and Alli ensured a competitive match, but The Blues progressed thanks to a 4-2 win. You’ll find them chalked up at 8/1 to win the FA Cup, or 40/1 a league and cup double.

Pochettino wants improvement in Europe

For as good as Tottenham were domestically last season, they were poor in the Champions League, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate to improve on that. Players seemed to suffer from a real lack of belief amongst Europe’s elite, which is strange as they feared no one in England, but with the confidence taken from last season’s push in the Premier League, we expect Spurs to hold their own. They’ll have a lot on their plate, with the move across London, and fighting on four fronts, but will not be without their supporters to cause an upset. Tottenham to win the Champions League, the stuff of dreams, surely? Perhaps not – back them at 25/1 to create waves.
