Fans are in for a treat with Garcia
29-year-old Mikey Garcia goes into the night with a perfect 36-fight CV, 30 of those wins coming by way of KO/TKO. If you’ve not seen anything of the Californian yet, you’re in for a treat, he looks the real deal and proved it to be true last time out when beating undefeated Dejan Zlaticanin, taking the Montenegrin’s WBC lightweight title in the process. Garcia made easy work of Dynamite, blowing him away in three.
That stretched the champion’s recent run to two stoppage wins in-a-row, and only one of his last 14 starts have gone the distance. That’s certainly worth keeping in mind, and you can back him to complete the hat-trick and bag another early night at 9/4 with Coral, our traders prefer the points cheer at even money. Little surprise, as Broner has never been stopped. You may wish to keep it simple and back Garcia for the straight win, an outcome currently trading at 2/5.
Broner’s battle against the scales continues
Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner has not been quite so difficult to work out in recent years, and after being dubbed the next Floyd Mayweather by some pundits, he has now lost two of his last eight. Broner dropped his unbeaten record in 2013 when losing to Marcos Maidana in an upset, came back to win his next three fights, then lost to Shawn Porter two years ago. Followers of the trends may find it interesting to know the 27-year-old has won three times since that loss to Porter. Will history repeat itself?
Broner has been making headlines outside of the ring for all the wrong reasons, but we’ll see how much of that is true, and how much of it is paper talk on Saturday night. Broner is a former champion at super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight, he even tried his hand at welter. He beat Brit Ashley Theophane with a controversial stoppage at lightweight in April of last year, but failed to make weight, forfeiting the title. 15/8 to win here, 9/2 for the KO upset or 6/1 to score on points.
Take favourite to win by KO/TKO
Broner hasn’t impressed fans in a while now. That win over Theophane looks good on paper, but it was a controversial stoppage – looking more like a low-blow – and his old problems with weight crept in again. He’s too small at 5ft 6inch to be a welter, but has real trouble getting down to lightweight or light welter. Many believe his best days are firmly behind him, despite only being 27, with his lifestyle to blame.
Whatever the reason, Broner should lose here, and lose well. If the reports of trouble away from boxing are true, he’ll not only be out-foxed, he’ll be taken apart by a real classy operator, so we’re having the value about Garcia to win by KO/TKO at 9/4.
