Five great Coral-Eclipse wins

We set the mood for Saturday’s show

Saturday brings the renewal of the ever-popular Coral-Eclipse day at Sandown, with the main event due to post at 3.35pm. With a chunky prize pot on offer to the winner, the 2017 edition has attracted a star-studded field.

Heading the early betting at Coral for the group one spectacle run over one mile one furlong is Cliffs Of Moher, and Aidan O’Brien’s well-bred three-year-old is a convincing jolly too, currently priced at 9/4. With a CV showing two wins and a second from his last three starts, it’s difficult to argue against that stance.

That purple patch includes victory at Chester when going off an odds-on shot, and he was last seen finishing runner-up in the Derby at Epsom last month, beaten less than a length by Wings Of Eagles. Sure to be extremely popular in the build up to the race, and rightly so. Cliffs Of Moher will need something special to live up to the level of these past Coral-Eclipse winners though. We flick through some of the more memorable runnings of this historic race…..

Mtoto – 1987

Elmaamul – 1990

Halling – 1996
