Hamilton and Vettel renew rivalries at Spielberg

This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix promises to be a fiery affair, following the drama of Azerbaijan. Drivers’ championship leader Sebastian Vettel drove into main rival Lewis Hamilton, causing the Brit to label his opponent a disgrace.

We’ve not heard the last of that, and the incident has done nothing but ramp up the excitement in what has already been a thrilling season. Click here to bet on a number of F1 markets, including Austrian Grand Prix winner and Drivers Championship.

Hamilton won here last year

As well as Vettel swerving into Hamilton, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was an enjoyable race from start to finish, with the safety car out three times, plenty of crashes and an unlikely 1-2-3 in Ricciardo – Bottas – Stroll. Very few would’ve had their stake money on that.

Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix will live up to the hype too, certainly if last year’s race is anything to go on. 12 months ago we saw Lewis Hamilton claim the top-step, beating Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen home, but only after he collided with team-mate Nico Rosberg. The pair clashed on the last lap as Hamilton went past to win the race in a heart-thumping climax.

Brit nailed down to claim world title

With that in mind, and the fact Lewis raced well last time despite Vettel’s attempt to take him out, it’s little surprise to see Coral traders keep the 32-year-old Englishman close. It’s a strategy they have adopted from the start, and is something they’re likely to stick with going forward. Punters wanting to get in early and secure the value can stick their cash on Lewis at 4/5.

The same man is also hot favourite to end the campaign as world champion, and going into Spielberg, there’s 8/11 on him returning to the top of the sport. Tight, but not as convincing as Mercedes are to win the constructors trophy, judged a 2/9 shot against Ferrari’s 3/1.

Dan a big price to double up

Rather predictably, Sebastian Vettel leads the chasing pack, currently priced as a 9/4 second favourite at the time of writing. He has a lot of making up to do after his antics last time, but remains at the head of the leaderboard, showing three race wins. That’s as many as Hamilton so far, but he’s picked up vital points finishes along the way, and sits on 153 points, against Lewis on 139. Valtteri Bottas is next in line, back at 111, but unlikely to cause an upset.

28-year-old Australian Daniel Ricciardo picked up his first win of the season in Azerbaijan, but our odds compilers don’t expect the Red Bull pilot to double up on Sunday. Those who want to side with the form driver will find a very tempting 22/1 marked on the betting board.
