Our main play lines up at Pontefract

The first Monday of July, and although you may not guess it when gazing through the window in some parts of the country, we’re now in the thick of the British summertime. Monday’s domestic horse racing meetings go at Pontefract, Wolverhampton, Windsor and Hamilton.

More to come from Cornerstone Lad

We get going at 2.00pm with a competitive handicap, and are taking Oriental Splendour to set the pace for the day, but in terms of our best bet, we sit on the sidelines waiting for Cornerstone Lad in the 3.30pm. A one mile four furlongs handicap, a dozen runners have been printed in the programme, but we believe we have the best of them.

Trainer Micky Hammond trusts his hope to jockey William Buick, and that’s going to result in a winning team, if our thinking turns out to be shrewd. The improving three-year-old gelding is yet to get his head in front from four previous career starts, but was seen going close last time out, ending runner-up at Ripon last month. Going off at a chunky SP that day, he was edged by Barwell at the finish.

Wall Of Fire

Booking of Buick goes as a positive

That most recent start came in his handicap debut over a shorter trip of 1m 1f, but he finished much better than he started, and the step up in trip is sure to bring about improvement. We’re expecting to see more from Cornerstone Lad on Monday, and if we get it, he’ll have a say in how this race goes.

Budged up 2lbs in the weights, that won’t rate as a major worry for anyone who wants to follow us in, and the booking of Buick goes down as a major positive for punters. Form on side, over a distance that should suit, and in good hands, there’s a lot to like about the NAP.
