Football fans have a treat on Wednesday

International football fixtures continue to come thick and fast this summer thanks to goings on in the Confederations Cup and U21 European Championships. Wednesday offers three matches worth our attention.

Portugal are favourites to better Russia in what goes as a top of the bill attraction, while our football traders expect Mexico to have little trouble in brushing past New Zealand. We give our opinions on the winner of Wednesday’s three matches, which can be used in a treble to spark your midweek to life.

Italy beat Czech Republic

Starting with the U21 Euros and Italy are taken to edge what promises to be a fascinating encounter with a plucky Czech side. The Italians got off to the perfect start, beating Denmark 2-0 in game one, but they go into this second in their group behind Germany. A convincing win would see them progress, while the upset will set up a nervy final leg. Italy must push themselves over the line, but we make them more than capable of getting the desired result, and they start us off at 8/15.

Portugal Euro 2016

Portugal beat Russia

Cristiano Ronaldo is hoping to put the uncertainty hanging over his future at Real Madrid to one side and help fire Portugal to a crucial win over Russia in the Confederations Cup. They sit joint-second in Group A, behind their opponents, but know a win here would open things right up. They had to settle for a disappointing draw with Mexico on Sunday, Quaresma and Soares scoring, Hernandez hitting back before Moreno knocked in a stoppage-time equaliser. Russia had little trouble beating New Zealand, but will find this to be a tougher test. Take the favourites at even money.

Mexico beat New Zealand

We’re only one game into the campaign, but New Zealand are already shaping as the whipping boys of the division, and with Portugal and Russia facing off, Mexico will know they can ramp up the pressure. They must win convincingly, and must score plenty of goals in doing so, but that looks very likely. They’re 1/8 with us to get the three points, but we’re confident enough to take them -1 on the handicap at 4/9.
