Repeat performance the Order of the day
Aidan O’Brien’s Order of St George is the short priced favourite for the 2017 renewal of the Ascot Gold Cup after winning this race just 12 months ago, with the re-opposing Sheikhzayedroad over five lengths behind.
Experience is key in these big races and despite there being some very good horses in the field, Order Of St George’s experience in numerous Group 1s alone is enough for him to significantly stand out from the crowd.
Despite the fact that his win in this race last year was on soft ground, the going won’t be an issue at all for O’Brien’s runner, who has won on practically every kind of going there is – another massive plus in the son of Galileo’s favour.
Big Orange was massively impressive in his Group 3 win at Sandown last time out, but the step up to 2m4f is definitely a question mark over him, as it is for many of the others in the field.
While Simple Verse and Quest For More may benefit by the step up in trip, one of particular note is Trip To Paris, who sprung a 12/1 shock to win this race in 2015 and now races back at this distance for the first time since that memorable win. It would take something truly special for him to beat the favourite though, but is worth a look at each way odds.
