Mayweather vs McGregor: it’s on

Boxing and UFC greats clash in a super-fight

After months of rumour, it was finally confirmed today that boxing ruler Floyd Mayweather Jnr will face UFC star Conor McGregor in Las Vegas on August 26th.

Although this one had been building for quite some time, the breaking story appeared to catch followers of both sports completely off-guard, with few believing it would ever actually come to fruition. Both men, famous for their trash talking and pre-fight hype, will go head-to-head in the squared-circle over 12 rounds, and we guarantee as much interest in the build-up as the bout itself.

Beginning of something beautiful, or a new low?

This one has split public opinion, and sent social media into overdrive. UFC fans know their man is up against it, but are firmly of the belief that if Notorious lands the big shot he’ll go looking for, Mayweather will be put to sleep. Lovers of boxing, on the other hand, believe this represents a new low for their sport.

There appears to be no fooling Coral traders, and they are refusing to be pulled in by the hype of it all, chalking Pretty Boy up as a convincing 1/12 favourite to get the win. The American superstar’s last appearance in a boxing ring was almost two years ago, when outpointing Andre Berto for the WBC and WBA world titles. That win stretched his record to a perfect 49 fights, and he has certainly found a way to celebrate his 50th. Floyd to KO McGregor, and put this one to bed, is 10/11, while another points cheer would go as a bit of an upset, even at 5/4.

McGregor’s only hope is the power shot

It’s worth remembering that, for as good as Conor McGregor is in the UFC, he has not been dominant in the octagon, and is now taking part in what will be his first ever fight in a professional boxing ring – and against one of the biggest stars who ever graced the sport. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Coral giving a chunky 6/1 on the upset.

The best chance for Notorious, according to casual fans, seems to be in landing a lucky punch. There’s no doubt he carries plenty of natural power into the contest, ensuring Floyd can’t leave his chin hanging out to dry, but let’s look at some of the names that couldn’t KO Mr Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton. Will Conor do what they couldn’t? 7/1 says he won’t, while a points cheer would stun everyone, 33/1 the prize.
