Feliciano Lopez

Lopez scores morale-boosting win over Dimitrov

Andy Murray went into the tournament chasing three in-a-row, but saw his challenge fall short, bowing out in the first round at the hands of Jordan Thompson, a man rated number 90 in the world before the start. The Scotsman has some improving to do before Wimbledon.

Followers will recall the last man to win this title other than Andy Murray was, of course, Grigor Dimitrov back in 2014. The 26-year-old Bulgarian beat Feliciano Lopez in an end-to-end tussle, Dimitrov eventually coming out on top thanks to a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 score. Lopez wasn’t disgraced in defeat, and will fancy his chances of going one better here.

Underdog boasts plenty of bite

Experienced 35-year-old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez gained revenge in the semi-finals this weekend, beating Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 to book his spot in the last two. That win over his old rival would’ve injected some real confidence into Lopez’s game, and the unseeded player will be looking to pull off an upset, with Coral traders pricing him as a 13/8 second favourite to go all the way.

Punters after a bit more for their money can try their luck on 2-1 Lopez in the set betting, an outcome that will see your balance boosted by 4/1. A perfect way to mark the occasion.

Cilic looking to be a touch more convincing

Opponent Marin Cilic, himself showing history in this format, banked the prize money here in 2012, beating David Nalbandian. The 28-year-old Croatian, currently ranked number seven in the world, enjoyed a big slice of fortune that year though. With the match hanging in the balance, 6-7, 4-3, Nalbandian threw a famous tantrum, coming off second best after kicking an advertising board in frustration. He had to default as a result, handing Cilic the title.

That seems to have been forgotten by our tennis team, and after watching Marin battle to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller, odds compilers have moved to chalk him up as a convincing odds-on favourite, 1/2 the call at the time of writing. Whatever the result, we should be in for a close-run race.
