Another Scotsman

Coral traders have Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes at the head of the betting, and reports coming out in the press make that a shrewd call. The former Rangers and Greenock Morton midfielder has totally transformed The Dons during his time in charge, establishing them as Scotland’s number two side behind Celtic. They finished second last year, by some distance over Rangers, and reached the final of both the Scottish Cup and League Cup, twice losing to Brendan Rodgers Bhoys. What makes his achievements all the more impressive is it’s been done on a shoestring budget. Seen as a real gem north of the border, and at only 45, has years to give. 5/4 favourite for the nod.

jl

Welsh wizard

It’s not often you see Ryan Giggs near the top end of the betting to become manager of a football club at a decent level, but the former Manchester United and Wales star is 12/1 fourth favourite here. Although the 43-year-old’s ability as a player can’t be brought into question, he’d go as a bit of a chance as manager of a team chasing promotion.Would Sunderland be willing to take the leap? Giggsy did, of course, serve as player-coach at Old Trafford and briefly took the wheel when Moyes was sacked in 2014. He finished up with a record of two wins, one draw and a single defeat, but told fans he broke down in tears under the pressure of managing the giants.

Monk

English made

Could Sunderland turn to a young, hungry and talented English boss? Garry Monk is currently on the look-out for a new challenge, having stepped down at Leeds, and although he failed to get the Elland Road club up into the Premier League this season, falling out of the play-off places in the final weeks, he can’t be given all the blame for that one. Monk is more than capable of taking on the Sunderland job, and could go one better than last time and get his employers into the top-flight – if given support by the board. At just 38 he’s inexperienced, but would rank as a long-term solution and, unlike the others, knows just what it takes to compete at this level. A 16/1 chance at the time of asking.
