England top our weekend super six
Just as punters thought they had squeezed the last bit of enjoyment out of the football season, we’re back in full swing on Saturday with a thrilling round of World Cup qualifiers, including a meeting of the Auld Enemy at Hampden.
Will that one follow the stats and see yet another comfortable England win, or can Gordon Strachan’s Scotland rediscover the glory days and record a famous triumph over their neighbours? England beat Scotland
Starting with the main event and it doesn’t pay to oppose England in this fixture. Since losing at Wembley to that memorable goal from Don Hutchinson in 1999, The Three Lions boast a 100 per cent record from three starts. The form side have scored three goals in each of those meetings, including a 3-0 in London late last year. On paper, the gulf between these sides is massive, we need only look at the squads for proof of that. Coral’s 7/10 on the away day is real value.
Denmark beat Kazakhstan
Denmark go into game six of their campaign level on points with Montenegro in second, six behind leaders Poland, who look nailed on to top the group. It’s now a race for second, and Denmark can give themselves the upper hand with a win over bottom club Kazakhstan, who are winless so far. They are away from home, but our 4/9 means they’re worth an interest.
Northern Ireland beat Azerbaijan
Northern Ireland go to Azerbaijan looking to complete the hat-trick. Michael O’Neill’s side downed Saturday’s opponents 4-0 in the reverse of this fixture, and followed that up with a convincing 2-0 vs Norway last time out. They have won three of their last four games at this level with plenty to spare, and go in brimming with confidence. Azerbaijan have lost their last two, and are winless in three. Norn Iron go in at a cracking 5/4.
Slovakia beat Lithuania
We don’t need a lot of encouragement to go against Lithuania in major competitions, and it’s no different here. Slovakia are in with a shout of getting out of Group F, currently second behind England. There are tougher tests ahead, and with both Scotland and Slovenia nipping away at their heels, it’s important to get a fourth win on the bounce. Once again, there’s plenty of value on offer here, with Slovakia at 7/10.
Poland beat Romania
Poland are runaway leaders of Group E, showing an unbeaten record of four wins and a draw. They had no trouble beating Romania when the pair met back in November, strolling to a 3-0 cheer, and that was followed with a 2-1 over Montenegro. Romania have managed just one win in five, making the 1/2 about home comforts look cosy.
Czech Rep beat Norway
Finally, it’s the leg that will boost up our returns, with the Czech taken to better Norway in a real crossroads tie for both teams. The away win has been written off at 19/10, but traders shouldn’t be quite so hasty, as the underdogs go in on the back of two wins in-a-row, including a 2-1 over Norway. This will be another edgy encounter, but the value is with Karel Jarolim’s crew.
