Will Hull, Boro or Sunderland bounce back?

It came as no major surprise to see David Moyes cut ties with relegated Sunderland earlier this week, resigning from his post after a nightmare time in charge of The Black Cats. Did he jump before he was pushed? Does he have something better lined up? Will fans really care?

The former Manchester United man was fast becoming public enemy number one at the Stadium of Light and would’ve squirmed at the thought of trying to get a side, with very little investment, up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, all with the crowd desperately waiting for him to slip-up. Resigning was the best outcome for all concerned.

Moyes

Sunderland can learn from Newcastle

The Sunderland side that went down was poor, fully deserving of their 20th-place finish, and any of the better players at the club will surely be off in the summer. We seriously doubt Jermaine Defoe will be playing Championship football next season. His current employers can take heart from the way Newcastle responded to the drop, with The Magpies returning to the top-tier in much better shape than when they left. Wiping the slate clean, they built back up, gaining confidence and belief on-route to winning the title.

Things look a lot more serious at Sunderland, running from the board downwards, and they need a complete overhaul. At first glance, we wouldn’t take them to win the league.

Marco Silva

Tigers must tie down Silva

Hull City must hold on to boss Marco Silva if they want to do anything of note in the Championship. Yes, the gaffer took them down, and yes, they dropped silly points under him, but most of the damage had already been done, and there’s no doubt they were a better side under his guidance. Given a summer to work with the team, we believe they will be a major force at this level.

It’s not a given he will stay however. His success at the KCOM didn’t go unnoticed, and Watford, who sacked Walter Mazzarri at the end of the season, have been linked. That would allow the gaffer to remain at the highest level, with a side capable of competing in the top-10, but it would be incredibly short-sighted by the manager to take that job. The Hornets’ board appear to operate on a season-long contract, changing their gaffer at the end of each campaign. It works for them, and they are in the Premier League and competing, but it wouldn’t be worth leaving the KCOM to take a 12-month trial.

Tigers fans will be hoping their Portuguese leader will be in it for the long-haul, and will stay for a crack at getting them back into the big league. The manager remaining would, hopefully, ensure most of the playing staff throw their weight behind the cause too, and he’s sure to be given the funds needed to strengthen in the transfer window. With a few shrewd buys, Hull could be real contenders for the crown.

Steve Gibson

Boro to splash the cash

Middlesbrough found out money can’t buy you everything in English football, and after being promoted as runners up behind Burnley in the 2015/16 season, they came straight back down again, with plenty of lessons learned. Chairman Steve Gibson released a statement to the press following their relegation, promising big changes.

He was first to take the blame though, admitting key decisions made at the top level of the football club were to blame, but they will not be pointing the finger at anyone in particular. A summer of improvement is planned, and fans will be confident Gibson will stick to his word and plough money into the team. They would’ve been given a golden handshake from the Premier League, and will have a strong vision, having seemingly learned lessons from that failure, on what must change.

The chairman seems to be dedicated too, laughing off reports of a £50m buyout from a Chinese consortium. A statement that would’ve encouraged fans to rush out and renew their season tickets also came from the top, with Gibson promising they will smash the Championship next season, and return as champions.

Keep up to date with the progress of these clubs over the summer
