Our star players from 12th – 14th May
Chelsea dominate the headlines as we go into a new week. The Blues finally got their hands on a title that has been theirs for a while now. Any hope of a Spurs fightback was crushed as Conte and co beat West Brom on Friday night.
That was only one of a few big results over the weekend, with Spurs piling the pressure on Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd with a 2-1 win to bring the curtain down on White Hart Lane. The club and its fans now look towards the future, but what a way to go out!
There was plenty in attack this weekend, so narrowing it down to just three forwards was a tough ask. We had to cut a few very good performers out of the final 11. Use the comments section at the bottom of this page to tell us your team of the weekend.
Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea)
The Premier League winning keeper has been a reliable performer at the back in the run-in, and again did his bit to help Chelsea over the line on Friday night. Part of a solid backline that kept upstarts West Brom out of the match.
Defender: Kyle Naughton (Swansea)
Swansea stretched their unbeaten run to four games, avoiding relegation with a win over Sunderland. The Englishman scored the all-important second goal to see them over the line, and was impressive at both ends of the park. That was his first strike since 2011 – great timing.
Defender: David Luiz (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s defence was, by far, the best of the weekend, and Luiz was the standout performer at he back. He has so often delivered when his team needed him this season, and Friday was no different. West Brom are a difficult side to master on their own patch, but were limited to just two shots on target.
Defender: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)
We can’t have Luiz without Azpilicueta, as both turned in a big shift vs The Baggies. It looked like the game would finish goalless for a long time, but The Blues were never in danger of conceding, with Azpilicueta and his fellow defenders giving them every chance of scoring a winner. Did nothing amazing, but everything well, and that’s what was called for.
Defender: Ben Davies (Spurs)
A memorable end to life at the lane, as Spurs swept past Man Utd. Davies put his body on the line at the back, and also got forward to set-up the opening goal with an inch-perfect cross, Wanyama heading his boys ahead. Was one of the best players on the pitch, and that’s saying something, given the company.
Midfielder: Jason Puncheon (Crystal Palace)
A solid win for Palace, which took them up to 13th in the table, hammering Hull 4-0. Puncheon was behind everything good about his side. Shown a yellow card for what looked a deliberate handball, but made up for it by assisting his side’s second goal. Great use of the ball all afternoon.
Midfielder: Morgan Schneiderlin (Everton)
It’s not often you’ll see Schneuderlin in our team of the week, but he deserves his spot here. Stood-out in a 1-0 win over Watford, doing the dirty work in the middle of the park, breaking down the advances of Watford, and picking out important passes going forward. A useful addition.
Midfielder: Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
A regular in our line-up, and for good reason too. He’s played a big part this year when called upon, doing a job on the big stage. Followers of the stats will know he played more attacking passes than any other player on the park vs West Brom.
Forward: Harry Kane (Spurs)
An obvious choice for team of the season, and was impressive against Man Utd on Sunday. Scored the match winner on 48 minutes, and looked like he could add another every time he had the ball at his feet. The United defence couldn’t deal with the England striker. A real class act.
Forward: Josh King (Bournemouth)
The Cherries hitman has been a star this year, and is sure to come in for a share of attention over the summer. Got the winner at home to Burnley, late in the day, and it’s surprising to know that he has scored the same number of goals as Kane this year, which makes him joint-best striker in the world.
Forward: Leroy Sane (Man City)
Sane didn’t score in an entertaining 2-1 win over Leicester at the Etihad, but more than did his bit. Set up City’s opener and won the penalty that saw them go 2-0 up. Was a real bundle of energy on the flank, always wanting the ball.
