The All Weather Champion Jockey talks us through his Saturday rides
I was delighted to win the Listed Magnolia Stakes on Absolute Blast as she’s a horse I’ve watched from afar this season and been hugely impressed with. I put her up as one of my all-weather horses to follow and it’s fair to say she’s been one that’s caught a lot of people’s eyes over the winter.
I was glad she rewarded my faith and the faith of her trainer and owner with that performance last weekend. She looks a filly that’s still on the up and I’d like to think she’ll have a good chance in the Easter Classic at Lingfield on Good Friday. That’s where she goes next and she’s proved she stays the trip well. She has to turn the form around with Convey, who she was behind in the Winter Derby, but I think she’s got the talent to do it. Before that, there’s the small matter of the Grand National at Aintree and it’s a race no one wants it miss.
We’ll be watching the race from the weighing room at Wolverhampton and we tend to do a sweepstake for the race. Hopefully I’ll pick out something decent but I don’t tend to have the best of luck in them! The one I’d like to get is Highland Lodge. He’s looked good over the National fences and having form around there is a big advantage.
6.20 Wolverhampton – Glorious Artist
He was a little disappointing the last day in a falsely-run race. You couldn’t really hold that against him and his performances before that had been solid. He’s on a decent mark and you’d like to think he can be competitive off of it.
6.50 Wolverhampton – Miss Patience
I worked her on Tuesday and she seems in good form. She ran reasonably well in a maiden that was a lot stronger at Newmarket so you’d have to think she’d have a good chance in this weaker race. A lot will depend on how good the Godolphin newcomer is really.
7.50 Wolverhampton – Farquhar
He’s had an injury that’s kept him off the course for a while. There has to be a little question mark about how much ability he still has after being off, but he was a talented horse before then running well in big handicaps. If he retains his ability then he’s more than capable of taking a hand in this race.
8.20 Wolverhampton – Senor George
He’s well handicapped on his past form and well capable. It’s just a case of whether he puts his best foot forward, which is how it is with a few of them in here really.
8.50 Wolverhampton – Rum Swizzle
If she’d had a run before this race I’d be really confident about her chances. Her trainer’s horses tend to improve for their first run so she may be best watched this time.
