A guess at who will go down

Middlesbrough’s win over basement boys Sunderland in midweek means David Moyes’ Black Cats are running extremely low on lives. The Premier League’s bottom club now look destined to take the plunge, swapping places with rivals Newcastle, who are shooting in the opposite direction.

As well as pushing Sunderland’s heads under, it also made things a lot more interesting down at the wrong end of the table going into the final weeks of the season. Swansea and Boro make up the other two in the bottom three, but the Welsh side are just two points off Hull and safety, while The Smoggies are in with a shout, six points from saving their skins.

Leicester sucked back in

With the pressure building, and time running out, it’s anyone’s guess who will be playing Championship football next term. Last season’s Premier League champions Leicester City may have put together a five-match winning run recently, but they’ve managed just one point from the last nine, and are only two wins better than 18th. Our traders think Craig Shakespeare’s side are safe however, and offer 80/1 on the Champions League quarter-finalists swapping Madrid for Burton Albion.

Middlesbrough dead and buried

Taking for granted that Sunderland and down and out, our odds compilers think the race will be on to avoid 18th, a position currently occupied by Swansea. Middlesbrough may have beaten Sunderland on Wednesday, courtesy of a goal from de Roon on eight-minutes, but it won’t be the start of the great escape. Our football guys in Stratford want nothing to do with the Riverside club going down, offering no more than 1/100 they hold their ground.

Swans look cooked

Swansea are another side going into the weekend on the back of a win, beating Stoke 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium last time. Goals from Llorente and Carroll threw them a lifeline, but they would’ve been horrified to get back into the changing room and see Hull City had done the same thing. Swansea are more than capable of winning matches between now and the end of the season, but the clock is against them, and Coral go 4/7 second-favourite’s they’re off. They have a tough run-in, and look certainties to join Cardiff.

Plenty of fight in The Tigers

Hull City have lost 19 times already this season, but their home form has been encouraging and they show four wins from their last seven, beating Swansea, West Ham, Middlesbrough and, most recently, Watford. The latter was achieved with 10-men, Niasse sent off on 25 minutes at the KCOM, but Markovic and Clucas saw them upset the odds vs a decent Hornets. Currently out of the bottom three, they are 13/8 to be pulled back in.
