NAP and next best at Newbury

Coral horse racing punters have plenty to be getting on with on Saturday, with UK and Irish meetings scheduled at Newbury, Lingfield, Bangor, Kelso, Stratford, Wolverhampton and Thurles. Those open to going a bit further afield will find the riches of Meydan worth a look.

You can bet on every race right here at Coral, all at the click of a button. If you’re still at the drawing board stage then we aim to lend a helping hand with our preview of goings on at Newbury, including a NAP and next best. Scroll to the bottom of this page where you will find a selection in each of the seven-races, designed to aid your multiples.

Coral horse racing ambassador Tom Scudamore is booked to ride Dauphine Ereine on her bow for new handler David Pipe.

Shot at a winner in the first

Racing gets underway at the Berkshire course from 1.50pm, and we go in nice and early with our NAP on the card. A three-miles one-furlong handicap chase, with a decent prize pot, 11-runners are expected to post, Shotavodka the best of them. David Pipe trusts Tom Scudamore in the saddle of his experienced 10-year-old gelding, and that promises to be a handy partnership.

Third last time out, around here in a similar contest, he gave an impressive effort that day, recovering from an earlier mistake to have every chance at the finish. That performance, his second run of the year, suggested he was back on track and the fans’ favourite looks to have been given every chance at the weights to improve on that today.

The selection boasts plenty of course form, and has won around here in the past, which strengthens our claims. I am expecting a race run to his liking, and the clues suggest he’s worth keeping close. Coral traders opened the market with Shotavodka as 5/1 joint-favourite, and that price looks worth a go.

Royal Ascot day 4

Sister Sibyl an interesting sort

Race of the day goes to post at 3.00pm for the grade two EBF and TBA Mares’ National Hunt Novices Hurdle Finale. The betting is wide-open, with Coral placing Copper Kay at the head of the list. An unconvincing favourite, there’s 13/2 on the shortest-price, which will be music to the ears of value-hunters.

I am taking them on with one at a bigger offer in Sister Sibyl for Hughie Morrison. The progressive five-year-old arrives with confidence to burn, having won last time out, and in three of her five career goes. She got off the mark at the earliest opportunity, winning at Towcester on debut in December 2015, and was also spotted entering the winner’s enclosure at that track again at the tail-end of 2016, then at Leicester in January.

That latest effort saw her edge out Treackle Tart, despite a few errors, and she responded to go and win the race when asked, which caught my eye. This is a step up in trip, but there’s enough about Sister Sibyl to suggest that can be taken as a positive and she intrigues me. So much so I’m having her as my next best at 12/1. That price also gives more reserved punters a shot at an each-way play.
