Order Of St George bets are as solid as they come from among Coral experts' 2016 Irish St Leger tips, but there's better value backing Wicklow Brave each-way.

Texas Rock picked out at a price

Sunday’s UK and Irish horse racing schedule is made up of meetings at Hereford, Wincanton, Downpatrick and Naas, and you are just a click away from the winners at Coral. Have your say now.

Highlight of the day goes at Naas as they host an entertaining seven-race card, headlined by the Irish Lincolnshire. We spin through the points of note in an attempt to solve this puzzle.

Favourite looks worth opposing

18-runners are expected to contest Sunday’s showpiece event, due off at 4.40pm, the penultimate race of a quality card. Despite a venue change – the race is usually contested at the Curragh – we lose nothing in terms of quality, and there’s plenty of early value in the betting.

Dermot Weld’s Sikandarabad has sat at the top of Coral’s ante-post betting for this year’s renewal for a while, and the four-year-old gelding is currently a 5/1 shot at the time of writing. With just one previous win to his name, at Galway in a maiden over seven-furlongs last summer, he doesn’t jump off the page as the one to throw your money on. He did finish as runner-up in the Irish Cambridgeshire over one-mile at the Curragh behind Sea Wolf on his penultimate start though, and that improved effort seems to have stuck with traders.

Tiger seems rock solid value

Personally, I’d prefer to have a go at something a bit bigger and that is Texas Rock, who appears to have been overlooked by the odds compilers, a little too easily. He arrives at track on an impressive run of form, following up back-to-back wins at the Curragh towards the end of last year with a third-place finish on the polytrack of Dundalk over today’s trip earlier this month. Somewhat of an unorthodox warm-up for the Irish Lincolnshire, but it ensures he will arrive fit, sharp and raring to go.

That effort last time out wasn’t up to the standard many had expected of him, especially after finishing last season with a flurry, but there wasn’t too much pressure put on Texas Rock that day and it seemed like connections were happy enough to let him have a run out, with one eye firmly on this race.

A return to the turf can only be seen as a positive for the selection and if we see the progress from last season that is expected by many in the know, then he will certainly make a nuisance of himself here. The market seems a little less willing to forgive that poor performance last time, meaning we can get our hands on Coral’s 14/1. A nice price for the win, but for those who prefer a bit of a cushion, there’s enough there to merit an each-way play. We’re doing 1/4 the odds the first four.
