Our NAP and next best at Carlisle

The end of what has been a memorable week of British and Irish horse racing, and we wrap things up with meetings at Carlisle, Ffos Las, Limerick and Navan. We won’t get the drama of the Cheltenham Festival, that’s for sure, but there will be a winner in every race, and plenty for Coral punters to get stuck into along the way.

Abbey taken to bounce back

We focus on matters at Carlisle, where six races get going from 2.15. Fattsota looks well worth siding with as the curtain goes up, but in terms of the NAP we pay little more than a passing interesting until the 3.55pm Thornby Veterans’ Handicap Chase. A 10-runner field battle it out over three-miles, but I am expecting things to drop into place again for Cultram Abbey.

Nicky Richards’ experienced nine-year-old has proven his liking for this track in the past, and got his first career win here back in 2014 off a chunky SP. He hasn’t been seen doing much of late, and fell last time out around here, but was runner-up late last year at Carlisle, beaten a head by Carrigdhoun.

The bare result of that fall last time doesn’t show up too good on his CV, but those who saw the race will remember he was going great guns when coming down at the last, leading by a comfortable margin when fluffing his lines at the final opportunity. That would’ve been frustrating for connections as they seemed to do everything right that day, making Coral’s 4/1 tempting on Sunday.

Fattsota to justify favouritism

By the time Cultram Abbey lines-up we’ll have everything crossed that we are onto a double, with our next best going in the opener. As mentioned, Fattsota is the one for us. David O’Meara sends out his eye-catching eight-year-old in the 2.15pm Novices’ Hurdle.

The selection comes with a decent pedigree on the flat, and was last seen winning at Musselburgh earlier this year. He lines up with the best form of the bunch, and is taken by the odds compilers to go and prove it. Coral traders have him as 4/11 jolly at present, and although it’s short, I make it fair.

2.45 – Gino Trail

3.20 – Little Bruce
