We map out our assault on week one

It’s round one of the 2017 Six Nations this weekend, with the action getting underway at Murrayfield on Saturday from 2.25pm, live on the BBC. It promises to be another enthralling tournament, and what a way to get us started!

We have picked out a weekend treble, to enhance your enjoyment of the matches, with £10 paying £109.30. Prices and returns are correct at the time of writing…..

Rugby Union - 2015 RBS Six Nations - Ireland v England - Aviva Stadium

Sexton misses trip to Murrayfield

Scottish pride to shine through

So, the curtain goes up at Murrayfield and the atmosphere promises to be electric as Scotland and Ireland do battle in what, on paper, looks a real 50/50 match-up. Despite this, the market seems to have put a line through the chances of the hosts, offering them as outsiders to win the match.

The Scots are never easy to beat in front of an immensely patriotic home support and they will be even tougher to bypass in the opening game of a brand-new Six Nations, where anything is possible. They have flown under the radar a bit in the build-up, but are a capable bunch and an upset on Saturday would see them taken seriously. Ireland go into this one without Johnny Sexton, and that is a massive blow to their chances. Too big to get over, I think. Scotland to win the match is 2/1 with Coral and we will try our luck.

France v England - 2016 RBS Six Nations - Stade de France

England fav to beat France

A French war in store

England’s head coach Eddie Jones expects Saturday’s top of the bill tussle with France to be another war, and few would argue against that. The 2016 Grand Slam winners start the defence of their Six Nations crown looking to build on a special effort last year.

The Red Rose are eager to extend their winning run, and are well fancied to achieve that at Twickenham against their bitter rivals. The French haven’t been given much of a chance, going on the pre-match odds, but I would be shocked if they came here and were ironed out. England have a couple of major injury worries to contend with and I am having France +13 points on the handicap at 10/11.

Wales v Italy - 2016 RBS Six Nations - Principality Stadium

Italy recorded a first win over South Africa recently

Italy no pushovers

The Italians are famed for going home with the wooden spoon, but they are improving year-on-year and are no longer the whipping boys of the class. That was proven again last year when pushing France close in week one, before losing 23-21, and they aim to force home the message when hosting Wales.

The Italians won’t go anywhere near winning the Six Nations, that feat is still some way off, but they can’t, and won’t, be simply ignored any more. Everyone in Rome will be buzzing following Italy’s first ever win over South Africa recently, injecting real confidence and belief into Azzurri. Our sports traders are giving them a 12-point head-start and I expect they’ll stay within that at 10/11.
