Standout players from the top-flight
It was a reduced service in the Premier League at the weekend, and we missed out on a Manchester Derby, due to the EFL Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday. There was still plenty to talk about however, as Spurs cranked up the pressure, going second in City’s absence.
Now, it breaks our heart to do a team of the week without mentioning Ibrahimovic and Gabbiadini, who have been regulars in our recent line-ups. Both were spectacular in the cup final, scoring two goals each, so deserve a mention, to say the least, but below you will find a team of the best players who caught the eye on league duty.

Goalkeeper: Ben Foster (West Brom)
The experienced shot-stopper was in inspired form on Saturday during his side’s 2-1 home win over Bournemouth. He conceded a penalty early in the day, but settled into the contest and made a couple of stunning saves late in the match to keep The Cherries from grabbing a share.
Defender: Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace)
Palace certainly need a defender they can rely on, and Sakho looks to be exactly that. He was a rock in The Eagles win over Middlesbrough on Saturday. If Big Sam can get more of that out of him, then they will stay in the division. Tailor made for their needs.
Defender: Gareth McAuley (West Brom)
Another eye-catcher for The Baggies, playing much of the day without his team in possession, he remained reliable at the back, and went up the other end to score what turned out to be the winning goal. Handed a chance by Boruc, he grabbed it with both hands.
Defender: Seamus Coleman (Everton)
The Toffees got a number of big performances out of their players on what was an emotional afternoon, with David Moyes back at Goodison. Got forward at every opportunity, and set-up Idrissa Gueye’s opener before half-time. Unlocked a solid Sunderland defence a number of times.
Defender: Partrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace)
Another defender who pulled his weight at both ends of the pitch. Scored the winner on 34-minutes, his first for the club, and didn’t they just need it? It moved Palace out of the relegation zone, and the player told fans at full-time that he lost his grandad last week and dedicated the goal to him.
Midfielder: Tom Huddlestone (Hull City)
The best player on the park in The Tigers’ weekend draw with Burnley at the KCOM. Scored the opener from the spot on 72-minutes, which was his first goal since 2014. A real handy man to have in the middle and knows the game inside-out.
Midfielder: Tom Davies (Everton)
Got man of the match against Sunderland, and fully deserved it too. Hit the bar with a cracking shot and used the ball intelligently in the middle, helping to move defence into attack in the blink of an eye. Has a big future.
Midfielder: Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
We don’t like blowing our own horn (of course we do), but we did say after the draw with Burnley that Fabregas could transform the Chelsea midfield, and he has done exactly that. Years of big game experience, and oozed class at the weekend.
Forward: Harry Kane (Tottenham)
We’re not going to say anything you haven’t heard before on the Spurs striker. Scored another hat-trick on Sunday, his third treble in nine games for the Londoners. Pochettino called him one of the best strikers in the world afterwards, and Coral won’t argue.
Forward: Michail Antonio (West Ham)
Was red carded for a second booking late in the day, but he had put in enough of a shift before that to merit his place. Had a big hand in the equaliser and was behind everything good about The Hammers at Watford.
Forward: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
It’s a wonder Everton were able to hold onto Lukaku in January and his goal on Saturday was his 60th for The Toffees, bringing him level with towering Scotsman Duncan Ferguson. Spent less time in prison too, I believe. He won’t be long passing that either if he can hold his form.
