NAP of the day goes at Wolverhampton

It’s the final Monday of the month and punters have horse racing meetings scheduled at Plumpton, Wolverhampton and Ayr. You can bet on all the UK racing, or cast your net further afield, right here at Coral.

Spes Nostra loves Wolves

Dodging the bleak weather elsewhere and we take comfort in the ever-reliable allweather card at Wolverhampton, which gets going at 2.20pm with an interesting handicap over one-mile one-furlong. Lemon Thyme is the winner of that one for us, but in terms of our NAP of the day, we keep our powder dry until the 4.25pm race.

A competitive one-mile four-furlong handicap, with 11 runners expected to post, this will take all the solving. I fancy Spes Nostra to show rivals the way home however. The Iain Jardine trained eight-year-old gelding seems to love it around Wolves, scoring here five times during his career, including a course hat-trick back in 2014.

He’s an experienced sort but has been moving down in the weights and looks to have been given every chance by the handicapper to get back in the winner’s enclosure on Monday. If he still has it in him to compete then he’ll go and do the business, especially in this sort of company, which is uninspiring to say the least. I’m happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Chasing riches

The race before – 3.55pm five-furlongs handicap – and Rich Again must be supported. In what looks to be a fantastic contest, James Bethell’s rep arrives at track chasing down a hat-trick, having claimed back-to-back races at Newcastle in January. It’s always worth striking while the iron’s hot, and that’s what we plan to do here.

The selection will be fitter, sharper and more confident than many of his rivals, and that is enough to set him aside in what seems to be a wide-open contest. Coral traders seem to have him picked out too, and he opened as 9/2 favourite with us. I think they are on to something.
