Will Tyson return to the ring?
Tweets suggest Fury fancies more
After enjoying a bit of a break over Christmas and New Year, Tyson Fury was back to his old self when popping up in a video on Twitter which thrust the former world heavyweight champion back into the headlines.
Dodgy over fences
Once again, it wasn’t the giant Manc’s boxing skills that were the topic of conversation as, looking desperately out of shape, we see him in the thick of the countryside with friends, dared to jump a nearby gate into the field. A tad immature, perhaps, but not an impossible task for an athlete standing at 6ft 9inches tall who once ruled the world in one of the toughest sports known to man.
So, like the legend that he is, Tyson refused to back down to the challenge and began the run up with that old fire in his eyes. I’d love to say that he leaped it like a stag, proving that he had been keeping himself in tip-top shape since beating Klitschko, but, as you will see for yourself, it was more Annie Power at the last in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham, without a shadow to pin the blame on.
Watching the big man’s hilarious epic fail, we tipped our hat in appreciation at the effort, but couldn’t help but wonder – will Fury ever box again and, if so, will he ever be world champion again? The out-spoken traveller was never dethroned in the ring, and he seems, like almost every former fighter, ill at ease with retirement.
Promising Christmas message
The 28-year-old took the boxing world by surprise when travelling to Germany and recording a punch-perfect performance to defeat long-term heavyweight ruler Wladimir Klitshcko on points in November 2015. In an unquestionable win, which had him a five round victor on one of the scorecards, the Englishman instantly injected excitement back into the sport’s premier division, releasing the iron grip that the Klitschko brothers had over it for years.
Fury’s well-documented problems since, included him vacating the WBO and WBA belts on medical grounds, with depression thought to be the major player. That put an end to any hopes fight fans had of seeing a rematch between himself and Wladimir, who will now take on Anthony Joshua in the spring.
The former champ raised interest over the festive period, sending out a Tweet to fans which read “Merry Christmas guys. I’ve had a nightmare 2016, done a lot of stuff I’m not proud of, but my promise to you is I’ll return in 2017.”

AJ must first overcome Klitschko before a dream fight with Fury could ever happen.
Joshua bust-up
That followed a rather intriguing war-of-words on the same social media platform, in which Fury reacted angrily to a comment from Anthony Joshua which suggested his fight with Klitschko will be one to change him from champion to legend overnight.
Fury’s response “how do you become a legend through beating a man who I spanked and took all his belts! Then u robbed 1! Legends don’t do that”.
There’s certainly big fights out there for Tyson Fury if he can beat his demons and return to the ring. Followers of the sport, and fellow professionals, would love nothing more than to see him get the right treatment for his depression and step back through the ropes a better fighter and man in 2017. An all-British clash with Anthony Joshua would sell-out any venue in the country, while he’d be thanked by many for sending David Haye back into retirement.
