Coral ambassador Alan Shearer sat down with us ahead of the New Year to discuss Premier League champions Leicester City’s poor form and risk of relegation, as the 2016/17 season continues to enthrall.

Having rallied to an amazing underdog feat by lifting the top-flight title last term, the Foxes have slumped in defence of their crown and are currently stuck in 16th place just three points above the drop zone. Could the champions really go down?

Listen to Shearer’s exclusive thoughts on Leicester below, while we’ve picked out some of the most insightful quotes from the Premier League legend’s latest interview with Coral…

“Leicester have to realise they’re in a relegation battle”

When asked whether the Foxes could really be at risk, Shearer stated: “They couldn’t win the league as well could they?”

“Sooner or later Leicester have to realise they’re in a relegation battle,” added the former England captain.

Leicester have won just four of their 18 league games this campaign, losing nine.

“They have to realise they’re in the mire”

“Their form has been terrible, their big players have been terrible that performed so well last year,” continued Shearer.

“[Jamie] Vardy, [Riyad] Mahrez, even [Claudio] Ranieri now has questioned the commitment of Mahrez.”

“So they have to realise they’re in the mire, they’re in trouble,” Said Shearer of the Foxes, who are behind recently promoted Burnley and Middlesbrough in the league table.

However, Shearer stated that he still expects the Midland men to find their way out of trouble.

“I wouldn’t expect them at the end of the season to be in that bottom three, but they have to start performing sooner or later.”

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
