Tolworth Hurdle tips: Finian’s Oscar odds the answer

Finian’s Oscar created a huge impression when scoring on debut under rules, so can take the step up into Grade 1 company in his stride to land the Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday (14:25).

After landing his sole start in an Irish point the gelding was bought for £250l by Irish owners Alan and Ann Potts and sent to join trainer Colin Tizzard.

His new handler made no secret of the fact that he held the five-year-old in the highest regard before his debut over hurdles at Hereford, and Finian’s Oscar could not have been more impressive in beating Acting Lass by seven lengths.

After tracking the leaders travelling strongly in the hands of a confident Tom O’Brien, Finian’s Oscar cruised into the lead two from home before quickening clear to swiftly put the race to bed.

Potential to be something special

It was a most taking display and the runner-up had previously bolted-up on hurdles debut and is very well thought of.

The manner in which Finian’s Oscar got the job done suggested he had a huge engine and needed keeping firmly onside. He is sure to come on a bundle for the experience.

This demands much more, but the son of Oscar is from the same family as 2012 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Finian’s Rainbow and has a potential to be something special.

Capitaine sure to go well

Siding with Capitaine is also worthy of consideration, according to our Tolworth Hurdle tips.

Siding with Capitaine is also worthy of consideration, according to our Tolworth Hurdle tips.

Capitaine is the sole entry for champion trainer Paul Nicholls and is another that commands the utmost respect.

The five-year-old has won two of his three starts over the obstacles, and in the last of those lowered the colours of some highly regarded sorts when landing a Grade 2 contest at Ascot.

Capitaine jumped superbly and made all to beat Captain Forez by 3 1/2 lengths and is clearly a very useful sort who is going the right way.

The form of that race also sets the standard in this line-up, so Captaine looks sure to make a bold bid to follow-up at a track which should play to his strengths.

Coral’s top tip: Finian’s Oscar odds look decent value to provide in-form trainer Tizzard with another big race winner. Kayf Grace bets were feared most, given her stable’s record in the contest, before she was pulled out, leaving Capitaine the main danger.
