Bet of the day: Trust in Ryan Moore

| 26.01.2017

We aim to move up a gear for the weekend

With the cold snap continuing to wreak havoc on the UK and Irish horse racing schedule, I will stick with the all-weather meetings until we see an improvement. Picking winners is difficult enough without battling against mother nature too.

Seven races are scheduled for Lingfield’s Friday meet, with the action getting underway at 1.10pm with a one-mile handicap that seems to have kept everyone guessing. I’ll be having little more than an interest until our bet of the day goes to post in the penultimate race on the card.

Plenty of all-conquering flat trainer Aidan O'Brien;s winners this season have come with jockey Ryan Moore on board.

Drive for success

The 3.40pm is a tight one-mile two-furlong handicap with the initial field consisting of six runners. We’ll have to be on our toes to pick the winner out of that, but, for me, Ocean Drive makes most appeal and I expect her to land us another winner in a week that has already been kind.

William Haggis sends out this exciting three-year-old filly who has only been seen once in competitive action so far, but made that a winning debut when scoring over course and distance earlier in January. Going off at a decent SP, she showed signs of inexperience early in the contest but did appear to knuckle down and set about her business when persuaded. Edging out My Rosie close home, she looked to have more about her and we should see it here.

John Egan, who was in the saddle that day, has been replaced by Ryan Moore, but that will come as no concern to punters who want to follow me in, for obvious reasons, with the selection in safe hands. Moore will be well-briefed on what’s needed to get the best out of the NAP again.

General’s given another chance

Last race on the card sees our next best of the day deliver his challenge before the curtain goes down. The 4.10pm amateur riders handicap is decided over one-mile four-furlongs and General Hazard is the one for us.

Granted, Michael Bell’s rep has let punters down in the past, finishing second behind Clovelly Bay around here last month when going off favourite, but there’s plenty of positives to be taken from his form. The four-year-old gelding has won two of his last four starts and it’s to be believed that there’s plenty of improving left in him.

General Hazard looks to be well treated at the weights, on his best performances, and has opened at a decent price.
