Open the week at Wolves
We’ve had little luck with the racing over the weekend, with Saturday’s card at Ascot headlining the disappointment. We look to the all-weather action at Wolverhampton as our saviour to start a brand new week.
Eight races go ahead at the West Midlands venue and our point of focus lines up in the 4.00pm, a one-mile five-furlong handicap, with seven-runners expected to be in contention. Of the field, I am drawn to Start Seven, who already boasts a result over track and trip.
Jamie Osborne’s five-year-old gelding got off the mark last time out – just two weeks ago – beating Eurato into second. He was not without his troubles that day and jockey Adam Kirby had his work cut out to get them home in front, but the turn of foot was there and he would’ve learned much from that outing. Further progress is expected.
More of the same expected
Eurato re-opposes again today but there’s little reason to think that the challenger can become champion and reverse the placings. The selection looks well in at the weights on that particular duel and I see him scoring a quick-fire double.
Kirby returns to the saddle and, after the work he did to safeguard the win last time, that must go down as a positive. The talented jockey is well-briefed on what is expected here and can go and pick-up where he left off.
Metronomic looks ready to deliver
Earlier in the day and we look to get up and running with a winner at 2.00pm, in the form of Metronomic. Richard Hannon’s rep has let punters down in the past, finishing only third last time out at Lingfield despite going to the start as favourite.
Ross Raith Rover and Zabdi pulled rank on that occasion but it was in much better company than he faces this afternoon and we are hoping that, what he learned that day, will stand him in good stead against a pretty uninspiring field.
If we get the progress I am expecting, we should see the three-year-old colt pay a career first visit to the winner’s enclosure.
