Liverpool beat Southampton
It’s not been a great start to the year for Liverpool, with no win managed in their last three Premier League outings, and a defeat in the first-leg of this EFL Cup Semi-Final already in the books. Jurgen Klopp’s boys were beaten 3-2 by struggling Swansea at the weekend, and must bounce back at the first time of asking.
History is very much behind The Reds however and they rank as the most-successful club in this competition. Everyone in the home dressing room will know what they must do to get through here, and that’s attack. They are a goal down, but that’s not an impossible task, and an early home strike would blow the tie wide-open. Liverpool start us off at 4/9.
Leeds beat Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest won at the weekend, ending a seven-match drought in the process. The Tricky Trees had lost five and drawn two of their previous seven starts and the side they did finally get the better of, Bristol City, have now lost each of their last eight.
We can’t get carried away with that weekend win, it is what it is, a narrow victory over an opponent fast being dragged into the relegation zone. Leeds, on the other hand, have lost just one of their last seven and have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five wins. We side with form at a generous 3/4.
Celtic beat St Johnstone
There’s few teams in British football with a better record than Celtic this term and they remain unbeaten in the Scottish top-flight under Brendan Rodgers. A 2-1 win over Rangers before the winter break was followed by a 3-0 Scottish Cup cheer over the minnows of Albion Rovers.
The Hoops are razor sharp this season and really don’t look like they will lose a match. They came back from a goal down at Ibrox, and I don’t think St Johnstone, who lost 3-0 to Dundee in their last league start, are anywhere near being good enough to stop the champs. 2/9 is fair.
Hearts beat Raith
Hearts continued to struggle under new boss Ian Cathro when ending the first match between these two 1-1. On-course to get their names in the hat for the next round at the first time of asking, they were pegged back by an 89th-minute goal from McManus.
If Hearts can get through this match, and they really should on their own patch, then they will be rewarded with a home tie against bitter Edinburgh rivals Hibs in the fifth round. Everyone in the capital will want a piece of that, and the stakes are too high to miss out on. Jambos at 2/7.
Egypt beat Ghana
We stick our noses into the African Nations matches and this looks to be a real cracker, one for the purists. Egypt beat Ghana 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier back in November and, although the format and surroundings are very different, the Pharaohs are experienced enough to repeat the feat at a seriously tempting 12/5 with Coral.
Mali beat Uganda
Mali and Uganda have never previously met on competitive business, so we are taking a bit of a shot at this one, but Mali held off a very determined Egyptian side earlier in this competition and that discipline at the back gives them the edge. They round us off at 3/4.
