Coral ambassador Alan Shearer sat down with our very own Nicola McGeady to exclusively share his thoughts on the Reds’ title chances and how a change of ‘keeper could bring the results they need.

Jurgen Klopp’s men currently sit second in the Premier League table, six points behind leaders Chelsea, so need to keep winning in order to remain in the title race.

You can listen to Shearer’s thoughts in the video below, but we’ve also picked out the best quotes from his latest interviews…

Liverpool title chances:

“[Liverpool] have to stiffen up defensively if they want to win the league”

Shearer thinks Mignolet will stay in the XI after keeping a clean sheet against Boro.

Shearer thinks Mignolet will stay in the XI after keeping clean sheets.

On Klopp’s decision to drop keeper Loris Karius in favour of Simon Mignolet, Shearer said: “It was the right decision as [Mignolet] kept a clean sheet (against Middlesbrough) and they won the game.

“[Liverpool] were very disappointing against Bournemouth [and] West Ham at Anfield, and when you don’t get the right results and players make mistakes the manger has the option to leave you out.

“It was the forward guys again, in particular [Adam] Lallana who was just superb against Middlesbrough – scoring two and setting one up – and he’s in fine form, so Mignolet I’m confident will keep his place against Everton.

“[Liverpool] have to stiffen up defensively if they want to go on and win the league, and rapidly,” he added.

“They kept a clean sheet against Middlesbrough, and a much needed one after they conceded goals against Bournemouth and West Ham, but going forward they’re as good as anything.

“And if they can [bolster their defence] then they’ll be in with a decent chance [of winning the title].”

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
