Alan Shearer video interview on Chelsea title challenge

Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer sat down with our very own Nicola McGeady to discuss the title challenge of Premier League leaders Chelsea with Christmas approaching and an away game at Crystal Palace next.

The latest in a series of exclusive video interviews, Shearer has plenty to say about the Blues. View the video interview below, or read Alan’s opinions which we’ve summarised below…

“They’re playing some exceptional football… Everyone is playing their part”

“Their confidence is sky high at the minute,” Shearer said of Chelsea. “They’re playing some exceptional football – 10 wins on the spin and eight clean sheets in that time.

“Everyone is playing their part. We’ve seen huge credit given to [Eden] Hazard, [Diego] Costa and Pedro this season and rightly so.

“Against Sunderland when they were put under pressure, they needed the goalkeeper to bail them out. [Thibaut] Courtois definitely played his part.

“They can still go on and win the next few games”

Alan is also impressed at the strength in depth of Antonio Conte’s squad at Stamford Bridge.

“Even when they have to change the team around, like they did against Sunderland with Hazard out and he left [Nemanja] Matic on the bench,” Shearer continued. “[Cesc] Fabregas came in, Willian came in and Fabregas scored of course, so they can still go on and win the next few games.

“Crystal Palace are next, who are having a terrible time, so they’ll be full of confidence.”

“Every team at some stage has a blip”

Nicola also asked Alan if Chelsea can keep their run going right to the end of the season?

“I think every team at some stage has a blip, and I would expect Chelsea somewhere along the line to have a little one,” Shearer added.

“They still have the quality and experience to get through it.”

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
