Coral’s Rumour Reel

More tabloid transfer talk for you today, as gossip about the futures of two Manchester United fringe players, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay, surfaces.

Schneiderlin and Depay to Everton speculation is gathering speed, so we look at that in more detail in Coral’s Rumour Reel for December 14.

Our football experts assess why this story is appearing on the back pages and whether the Toffees have more pressing concerns for the winter window…

Schneiderlin and Depay to Everton?

Neither France anchorman Schneiderlin, 27, nor 22-year-old Netherlands winger Memphis have started a Premier League game under new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho this term.

Both players were recruited the summer before last for a reported combined £50m, but ‘the Special One’ is willing to let the pair leave Old Trafford for Goodison Park this January.

This comes despite Everton trailing Man Utd by a single point and place prior to the Red Devils’ midweek trip to Crystal Palace.

Bidding to replace Barry?

Current Toffees boss Ronald Koeman worked with Schneiderlin at Southampton, where coach and player launched their respective Premier League careers.

Everton are in need of a long-term replacement for Gareth Barry, who turns 36 in the New Year and is out of contract at Goodison this coming summer.

With Bosnia anchorman Muhamed Besic out with a serious injury until 2017, Schneiderlin would compete with Barry, Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson, Idrissa Gana Gueye and James McCarthy for a spot in the Toffees engine room.

Mempis to cover for Bolasie?

Although a permanent transfer away from Old Trafford for Schneiderlin appears on the cards, Memphis’ move may be a loan deal with Koeman reportedly keen to recruit his compatriot on a temporary basis.

Injury to Everton summer signing Yannick Bolasie has prompted this interest, though Koeman is well-stocked with wide options. Gerard Deulofeu, Aaron Lennon, Kevin Mirallas and Enner Valencia can all play on the wing.

Some Toffees fans may be wondering why there is talk of recruiting attacking options when they’ve kept just one Premier League clean in a dozen games. Ageing centre back pair Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams have not been as solid as anticipated.
