Upswing a tasty each-way punt in Tommy Whittle

Upswing looks nicely treated on the pick of his form and decent each-way value in a wide-open renewal of the Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase at Haydock (14.40).

The eight-year-old, who was a useful staying hurdler, ran a blinder when chasing home Sausalito Sunrise in a competitive 17-runner contest at Cheltenham 13 months ago.

After held-up at the rear by jockey Barry Geraghty, Upswing made steady headway three from home before staying on strongly after the last to go down by just 1 1/4 lengths.

Sausalito Sunrise, from whom Upswing was receiving just 5lb, has since gone on to land a valuable handicap chase at Ascot and is now rated 155.

That gives the form a strong look and suggests that Upswing should be up to winning races off his current mark of 140.

Although the selection’s form has been very hit and miss, since then he showed that he retained plenty of ability of his penultimate outing in a class 1 contest at Cheltenham when a 7 1/2 length fifth of 17 to Viconte Du Noyer.

Judge on that display Upswing looks weighted to make his presence felt in this lower grade class 2 contest.

Eamon An Cnoic weighted to collect on handicap debut

Eamon An Cnoic opened his account in good style last time out and can cash-in on what looks a lenient mark to follow-up in the 2m conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle that gets proceedings underway (11.50).

The David Pipe trained five-year-old came from off the pace and to take up the running at the last only had to be driven out to beat The Blue Bomber by 1 1/2 lengths at Fakenham.

Eamon An Cnoic scored withe more in hand than the winning margin suggests and the third home Gracful Legend has come out and won since to be rated 115.

That gives the form a solid look and suggests that the assessor has taken a real chance in allotting the selection an opening handicap mark of 123.

Pipe also does well with his runners at the Merseyside venue and another plus is that Eamon An Cnoic has the services of the highly-talented David Noonan whose claims takes another 3lb off his back.

Colins Sister can complete hat-trick

Trainer Fergal O’Brien has team in flying form and Colins Sister can provide him with another winner in the Listed 2m 2f Mares’ Novice Hurdle (14.05).

The five-year-old had some smart form in bumpers last season and opened her account over the obstacles at the first time of asking when scoring readily by two lengths on return to action at Chepstow in October.

Colins Sister has since gone to easily land a 15-runner contest at Wawrick by 15 lengths and looks an exciting recruit to the hurdling ranks who can take this en route to much better things.
