Weekend in pictures for December 17-18

Another compelling weekend of sport has passed us by and, with plenty of action to look back on, Coral review it in images with the latest edition of our weekend in pictures for December 17-18.

Football: Premier League

An intriguing Premier League campaign continued into matchweek 17, with plenty of drama and excitement having unfolded up and down the country…

Costa strike sinks Palace

In-form frontman Diego Costa struck the only goal of the game for Chelsea in a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace, as the Blues extended their winning run to 11 Premier League games and went seven points clear at the table's summit.

Zlatan double dispatches Baggies

Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted his 10th goal in nine outings for Manchester United as his double helped secure a comfortable 2-0 success over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Man City comeback stuns Arsenal

Second-half strikes from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling saw Manchester City battle back from a goal down to earn a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad and move up to second in the top-flight standings. Theo Walcott had opened the scoring after just five minutes but the Gunners squandered their lead to lose for a second successive game.

10-man Foxes fight back to hold Stoke

Champions Leicester City remarkably recovered from a first-half red card for Jamie Vardy and a 2-0 deficit to ultimately secure a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. Bojan Krkic and Joe Allen netted in the opening 45 minutes after Vardy had been dismissed, but goals from Leonardo Ulloa and Daniel Amartey sealed a point for the Foxes.

Snooker: Fu downs Higgins to win Scottish Open

Horse Racing

Ascot and Navan hosted hot horse racing action this past weekend…

Unowhatimeanharry has the World at his feet

Unowhatimeanharry is the new clear favourite for the 2017 World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after extending his winning run to seven with an emphatic success in the Grade 1 LT Long Walk Hurdle at a foggy Ascot. The heavily-backed 6-5 favourite came from off the pace under an ultra-confident Barry Geraghty to take up the running at the last where his nearest rival from Ballyoptic came to grief. Unowhatimeanharry had that rival held at the time and then only had to be driven out to beat the game Lil Rockerfeller by 4 1/2 lengths. The J P McManus owned eight-year-old is clearly on an upward curve and is now the one they all have to beat in the World Hurdle come March.

Brain Power charges to glory at Ascot

Brain Power defied a rise in the weights to run out the impressive winner of the Wessex Youth Trust Handicap Hurdle at Ascot in the hands of David Mullins. The Nicky Henderson-trained five-year-old, who had to shoulder 7lb more than when winning a Listed event at Sandown last month, was always travelling strongly in the midfield and after being produced to take up the running at the last scooted clear to easily beat stable companion Consul De Thaix by five lengths. It was a most taking display and one which suggested that the ultra-progressive Brain Power could be a lively outsider for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Death Duty delivers in style at Navan

Death Duty looked a star in the making when further enhancing his 2017 Cheltenham Festival credentials with a smooth success in the Grade 2 Navan Novice Hurdle at the County Meath venue. The Gordon Elliott trained five-year-old, who had previously been successful at Roscommon and Navan this season, completed the hat-trick in style under jockey Bryan Cooper. After travelling ominously well throughout and jumping slickly, Death Duty took up the running two from home and quickened clear to readily beat Monalee by 3 3/4 lengths. The Gigginstown House Stud owned gelding has several possible options at the Festival in March, but Elliott said after the race that he believes he is the ideal type for the Albert Bartlett.

Darts

The PDC World Darts Championship continued at the Alexandra Palace in London and swift arrowsmith Ricky Evans produced one of the talking points of the weekend…

Ricky Evans throws quick-fire 180

Despite eventually tasting defeat in a five-set thriller against Michael Smith, Ricky Evans produced a memorable moment in the PDC World Darts Championship by throwing an incredible 2.16 second 180 during his match.
