Djakadam delivers again in John Durkan at Punchestown
Djakadam produced a gutsy display to land back-to-back runnings of the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase and further enhance his claims for the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Ruby Walsh’s decision to partner Willie Mullins’ charge, who has finished runner-up in the last two runnings of the Gold Cup rather than head to Cork for the Hilly Way Chase ride on superstar Douvan, paid dividends with a determined success over Outlander.
The 4-5 favourite tracked the front-running Sub Lieutenant until touching down over five out in a share of the lead, and when Outlander threw down a determined challenge at the last Djakadam found extra to forge clear and score by 1 1/4 lengths.
Douvan dazzles in Hilly Way romp
Douvan barely had to break sweat when making a winning return to action in the Grade 2 Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase at Cork.
Last season’s Arkle Trophy hero got his campaign off to a flying start by completely outclassing the opposition to stretch his unbeaten run since joining trainer Willie Mullins to 11.
After being sent straight to the front by jockey Paul Townend, Douvan jumped well apart from a minor error at the third-last to stroll home by 22 lengths from Days Hotel and cement his position at the head of the betting for the 2017 Queen Mother Champion Chase.
