Caspian Caviar Gold Cup tips: Bouvreuil each-way attractive due to profile

For punters seeking Caspian Caviar Gold Cup tips, Bouvreuil was a big eye-catcher on seasonal reappearance and looks decent each-way value at the odds on offer in the 2m 4f feature at Cheltenham this Saturday (13:50).

This Paul Nicholls trained five-year-old was a smart hurdler who ran a blinder when second of 22 to Qualando in the 2015 running of the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Bouvreuil then had his attentions switched to chasing at the start of last season, opening his account over the larger obstacles at the second time of asking when showing a good attitude to beat Vyta Du Roc by 1 1/2 lengths at Doncaster.

Fine effort at the Festival

He then disappointed next time out when last of five to Vaniteux in a Grade 2 at the same venue, but quickly bounced back and showed that running to be all wrong when a fine runner-up of 20 to Ballyalton in the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chaser at the Cheltenham Festival back in March.

After being held-up in mid-division in that latter, Bouvreuil made stealthy headway to take up the running at the last before being unable to find any extra close home to be beaten just 1/2 a length.

It was a fine effort on just his fourth start over fences and one which suggested Bouvreuil would have more to offer this season.

Eye-catching return to action

That view was confirmed when the son of Saddler Maker finished fifth of 17 to Taquin De Seuil in the Betvictor Gold Cup on return to action over course and distance last month.

Bouvreuil made a costly error three from home when trying to make a move, before keeping on really well to be nearest at the finish and beaten 6 3/4 lengths.

There is little doubt he would have been concerned in the finish but for that mistake, and Bouvreuil is set to meet the winner on 5lb better terms in this.

Nicholls has excellent record in race

Given how the race panned out, that may well be enough to see the selection reverse the placings, especially as Taquin went into that contest with the benefit of a run under his belt.

Bouvreuil looks sure to come on a bundle for the outing, and another plus is that Nicholls has a fine record in the race.

The Ditcheat handler has won three of the last seven runnings, courtesy of Poquelin (2009 and 2010) and Unioniste (2012).

In Bouvreuil, Nicholls has a gelding who runs the track well, solid form in big field handicaps, remains open to further progression and looks to have the ideal profile for this valuable contest.
