Conor McGregor odds ahead of UFC 205

Conor McGregor’s rampant rise to UFC superstardom was compounded when the Irishman stopped Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds last December. With one perfectly-timed left hand he secured the featherweight title and ended the Brazilian’s decade-long reign.

All roads then pointed towards an attempt at history. McGregor was in pursuit of the lightweight strap, as he looked to become the first man in the organisation’s history to hold two world titles simultaneously. Former champion Rafael dos Anjos was standing in the way, but chances of achieving such a feat were soon crushed.

‘The Notorious’ saw his road towards two-weight supremacy take an unexpected and ultimately career defining turn. Then champion Dos Anjos was forced out of the scheduled match-up through injury. This led McGregor into a dramatic two-fight side story with Nate Diaz.

With no belts on the line, McGregor suffered his maiden setback to the Californian, before bouncing back to gain redemption in their rematch and boost his UFC stature even further. Now, the Dubliner is on the verge of headlining arguably the greatest card in UFC history against reigning lightweight title holder Eddie Alvarez.

In what is set to be the first UFC event held in New York for over 20 years, McGregor will enter at odds-on 4/6 favourite to make history on a monumental night at the prestigious Madison Square Garden. Though Alvarez is the man hoping to end the Irishman’s attempts at a landmark success.

History beckons for ‘the Notorious’

Having stormed onto the UFC scene in 2013, McGregor has rampantly shot to the top of the sport. The quick-fire win over Aldo will likely be his most memorable career moment. But the featherweight champion’s retribution against Diaz at UFC 202 was a defining conquest.

Next up, just three years on from his debut in the company, McGregor will enter the octagon as the star of a colossal show at MSG. The illustrious venue has hosted the likes of legendary bouts including Joe Louis v Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier I.

Though it’s this flamboyant fighter from the small Dublin suburb of Crumlin that has incredibly ascended to the pinnacle of his trade to headline the venue’s maiden MMA event. Following the recent legalisation of the sport in New York, McGregor will look to shine in the city’s anticipated outing.

“I have nothing against him,” McGregor stated. “I run New York. I run this whole s**t. And ‘Mystic Mac’ predicts I’m going to KO you inside one round.

“I run New York…”

“Like I said, he’s chinny. He has a chin. He gets cracked, he gets dropped, and it has happened throughout his career. He’s a weathered fighter. He’s on his way out and he’s very, very lucky to be in the position that he is in. One round is all it will take me to knock him out.”

‘Mystic Mac’ has long been predicting the outcome of his fights. More often than not he’s been right on the money too. Though his latest opponent poses a huge threat and his odds of 6/5 for victory are highly promising and could prove prosperous. But McGregor has historic intentions on his mind for UFC 205.

“I’m very happy with the 155-pound weight limit,” he continued. “I feel like with all the divisions I ran around and ran through, 155 I feel will be the one where I take over the most.”

With the deadly Dubliner calling an opening round stoppage success, an 11/10 price can be had on there being under 1.5 rounds. Though, against a resolute champion in Alvarez and off the back of a points win over Diaz, odds of 4/6 are on offer for there to be over 1.5.

The lightweight title fight is the third on the UFC 205 card. It stars Tyron Woodley against Steven Thompson for the welterweight strap too. A women’s strawweight showdown between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Karolina Kowalkiewicz also features.

Though once again, after gaining sweet redemption over Diaz in Las Vegas, it’s ‘the Notorious’ Conor McGregor that heads into this prodigious UFC 205 card as the leading light and star attraction.
