Horse racing

Among the top racing action across Saturday and Sunday was the prestigious Coral Hurdle at Ascot. See how the likes of Yanworth, Cue Card, Nichols Canyon and Identity Thief got on in their respective races…

Yanworth triumphs in thrilling Coral Hurdle

Yanworth got the better of a titanic tussle with Lil Rockerfeller to make a winning return to action in the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle at Ascot. The Alan King trained six-year-old, who was one of last season's top novices, travelled well throughout under jockey Barry Geraghty but had to dig deep after the last to get up close home and win by 3/4 of a length as the runner-up battled bravely all the way to the line.

Cue Card captures third Betfair Chase

Cue Card put a disappointing seasonal reappearance firmly behind him when storming clear to land the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock for a third time. The Colin Tizzard trained 10-year-old stalked 2015 Gold Cup hero Coneygree until taking up the running four from home and pulling clear from the second last to win by 15 lengths. He now has a chance of landing a £1m bonus if going on to land the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Nichols Canyon provides Mullins with sixth Morgiana at Punchestown

Nichols Canyon justified odds-on favouritism to record back-to-back wins in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown and provided his trainer Willie Mullins with a sixth successive victory in the Grade 1 contest. Jer's Girl pressed Nichols Canyon the whole way and approaching the penultimate hurdle the pair were locked together. But when they emerged from the fog Nichols Canyon had asserted under Ruby Walsh and won easing down by 12 lengths.

Identity Thief maintained his unbeaten record over fences in the Ryans Cleaning Craddockstown Novice Chase at Punchestown to lead home a one-two-three for Irish trainer Henry de Bromhead. The six-year-old only had to be driven out by Bryan Cooper to assert on the run-in and beat Ordinary World by a length in a race run in poor visibility due to fog and remains firmly on course for a crack at the 2017 Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival.
