Coral horse racing experts give their Cheltenham The Open day 1 tips, featuring Shuil Royale odds and Sizing Codelco bets from Prestbury Park on Friday, November 11.

Shuil Royale odds appeal in opener

Harry Fry’s Shuil Royale holds every chance of getting punters off to a winning start in The Open meeting at Cheltenham’s first race this Friday, with victory in the Glenfarclas Veterans’ Handicap Chase qualifier (12:55).

Arriving at Prestbury Park on the back of an eye-catching win around Aintree last time out over three miles, Shuil Royale drops back in trip.

Sent off at a chunky SP at the Grand National venue, perhaps the most impressive aspect of that victory was the manner in which he left the chasing pack trailing before popping over the last.

Despite seemingly taking things too easily when in front, jockey Noel Fehily was quick to focus Shuil Royale and he ran out a five-length winner over closest challenge Your Busy, who also holds an entry at Cheltenham today in another race.

Fehily provides the ideal partnership

Highly experienced 11-year-old gelding Shuil Royale, a product of King’s Theatre, delivered his Aintree result on the back of a close-second behind Ballyknock Lad in the Peter Freeman Memorial Handicap Chase at Worcester in August.

That form rates as a real positive going into this one and the booking of Fehily back in the saddle can’t do his chances any harm either.

Horse and rider seem to have struck up a good working relationship, as Fehily was in the plate for each of the last three wins to further rubber stamp the selection.

The 40-year-old has been a regular visitor to the winner’s enclosure already this month and will view getting aboard Shuil Royale again as an ideal opportunity to register another victory.

Jumping problems as issue for rival Realt Mor

Realt Mor shapes as the main danger to he selection, having won around Down Royal over 2m a week ago, but where Shuil Royale steps down in trip this horse must find further.

Gordon Elliott’s charge has also proven in the past that today’s trip will present no particular problems, getting home in front over at Fairyhouse back in March.

His jumping has been a bit iffy in the past, however, coming down four times previous, including at Listowel. There will be no margin for error here, and, for that reason, he isn’t worth the risk.

Sizing Codelco bets suggest debut win for Tizzard

Meanwhile, Sizing Codelco looks in line to make his bow for new handler Colin Tizzard a winning one in the extended 1m 7f handicap chase (13:30).

A change of train can only enhance the prospects of this seven-year-old, who finished a 6 1/2 length third of 12 behind Bright New Dawn in the Three.ie Handicap Chase at the Punchestown Festival on his last outing for Henry de Bromhead.

This contest is expected to play to Sizing Codelco’s strengths and, with Aidan Coleman taking the reins, he’s sure to be right in the mix at the business end.
