The Cashel Man each-way among top Newmarket tips for October 8

Newmarket tips for October 8 focus on the big betting race of Saturday, the Cesarewitch Handicap (16:10). The Cashel Man each-way looks real value in a typically fierce and wide-open renewal of the 2m 2f handicap.

Trained by David Simcock, the four-year-old improved throughout last season when winning three of his four races.

In the last of those over 2m at this venue The Cashel Man came from off the pace to forge clear to beat the now 100-rated Amour de Nuit by five lengths.

This most taking performance suggested the son of High Chaparral was a stayer that needed keeping firmly onside.

Solid run in trial

Siding with David Simcock's The Cashel Man each-way in the Cesarewitch could pay off this Saturday.

That view was confirmed when he finished a highly promising one-and-three-quarter-length second of 15 to Saigon City in a hot handicap at York.

The Cashel Man then shaped far better than the bare result suggests when a five-length eighth of 20 to Dannyday in the Northumberland Plate consolation race at Newcastle.

He comes into the race on the back of a solid staying on second to Penglai Pavillion over course and distance in the trial for this contest.

Judged on the pick of his form, a mark of 89 looks exploitable. Other pluses are that The Cashel Man has bagged a good low draw in stall eight and has the services of William Buick in the saddle.

Abdon bets to deliver in Darley Stakes

Abdon disappointed last time out, but can bounce back to land the Group 3 Darley Stakes (17.20).

The Sir Michael Stoute trained colt looked a smart prospect and one to keep onside when winning on his sole start as a juvenile, overcoming a slow start and greenness to land a 10-runner maiden at Newbury by 1/2 a length.

That view was confirmed when Abdon chased home subsequent Coral-Eclipse hero Hawkbill in a Listed contest at this venue on return to action.

After being held-up, the three-year-old made good headway on the outside two from home. He stuck to the task well to be beaten just over a length without being unduly knocked about.

Return to sounder surface will suit

Abdon then failed to shine behind that rival when eighth in the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot. After being given a break, however, he got back to winning ways when cosliy beating the highly-regarded Gershwin in a handicap at Haydock.

Although only third in a Listed contest at Ayr last month, Abdon was given plenty to do. He also seemed unsuited by the testing conditions.

The return to a sounder surface is likely to see him in a far better light. On his run behind Hawkbill, Abdon looks the one to beat.
