Shearer has his say on Liverpool v Man Utd

Coral ambassador Alan Shearer has played in his fair-share of Tyne-Wear derbies over the years, so who better than the former England international to give his views on the upcoming Premier League Liverpool v Manchester United grudge match?

Candid about Reds coach Jurgen Klopp’s title ambitions, Shearer also provides his views on Jose Mourinho’s team selection headaches and more.

Watch our exclusive interview below and read on to find out what Shearer has to say on Monday’s dramatic derby match-up…

“It’s a huge fixture”

“It’s a huge fixture both for Liverpool and Manchester United, the rivalry is immense,” said Shearer of the clash that is already being billed as a test to see if either team can challenge for the title.

On the atmosphere in this bitter Northwest battle, Shearer added that it is “always a great atmosphere whether it’s at Anfield or whether it’s at Old Trafford.

“Oh it’s a red-hot atmosphere,” continued the Premier League all-time top scorer on the feisty fixture.

“Secretly inside Jurgen might be saying to his players ‘we can win’..”

Can Liverpool finally go all the way this year and claim a first ever Premier League trophy? Or is a top four finish the target?

“I think that’s what they will tell you,” said Shearer, “but I think secretly inside Jurgen [Klopp] might be saying to his players ‘we can win the Premier League’..he’ll be saying to his team ‘nothing should scare us.’

“They have been impressive the way they press high, the way they score goals, but they’re still vulnerable at the back – particularly from set-pieces,” finished Shearer on the Reds’ strengths and weaknesses.

“There’s a lot at stake”

While, the ex-England captain also thinks Man Utd manager Mourinho is yet to find his best XI.

“With Liverpool going so well and Man Utd not so well…I think the problem with Jose [Mourinho] is he doesn’t know his best team of yet.

“He’s had the problem of leaving [Wayne] Rooney out, fitting [Paul] Pogba into the system or where he wants to play.”

Finally, with just three points between these rivals, Shearer highlights: “There’s a lot at stake, it’s such an important game.” It’s going to be a nail-biter…

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
