Lots to like about Luca’s Cryptic and Diamond Geyser

Trainer Luca Cumani does tremendously well with his runners at Kempton and looks to hold leading claims of landing a double on this evening’s card at the Sunbury-on-Thames venue with Cryptic and Diamond Geyser.

The Newmarket handler has a strike rate of 29.4 per cent the track in the past 12 months, saddling five winners and five placed from 17 runners.

In Cryptic, he has a gelding who scored in good style last time out and looks capable of defying a rise in the weights to follow-up in the 1m handicap (19.40).

The three-year-old has won two of his three starts at the venue, finishing an excellent second on the other occasion.

In the last of those successes 15 days ago, Cryptic posted a career best effort when coming from off the pace to land a competitive 14-runner contest by a length from Broughton’s Vision.

The son of Lord Shanakill was well on top at the finish to score with more in hand than the winning margin suggests and 5lb rise in the weights looks more than fair given his excellent course form.

Diamond Geyser to sparkle now eased in grade

Diamond Geyser runs in the 1m 4f handicap (20.40) and looks a massive player on the pick of his form now dropped back down in class.

The colt opened his account with a game neck success on the polytrack surface at Lingfield back in June and has finished runner-up twice in four subsequent starts on the turf.

In the last of those, Diamond Geyser stuck to the task well to go down by 2 3/4 lengths to Guns Of Leros in a class 4 contest at Goodwood off a mark of 77.

Luca Cumani's Diamond Geyser can take advantage after a drop in class after some fine form.

The winner is a thriving sort who has since gone on to land the hat-trick and the form reads really well in the context of this contest.

Although Diamond Geyser has since finished last of five at Yarmouth, he was only beaten 4 3/4 lengths in what was a hot little class 2 affair.

The return to class 4 company and the artificial surface is sure to see the son of Cape Blanco in a far better light and Diamond Geyser should be well up to winning a race of this nature off his current mark of 76.

Harwoods Volante handicapped to strike

In the 6f handicap that brings proceedings to a close (21.10), Harwoods Volante is a fascinating contender now returned to the artificial surface.

The gelding has some solid form to his name on the polytrack in 2014 when trained by Amanda Perrett, winning twice and finishing runner-up on two occasions from six starts.

In the last of those successes Harwoods Volante landed a class 3 contest at Lingfield by a short-head off a mark of 86.

The five-year-old went on to finish a fine fourth to the classy Polybius in a similar grade affair over course and distance of 89 and is now able to race in this lower grade class 4 contest off just 84.

That makes Harwoods Volante, who is a course and distance winner, dangerously well-treated and he now makes his belated return to the polytrack having traced on the turf in all of his 21 runs since joining the shrewd David O’Meara.
