Forlan’s last minute winner (2003)
Diego Forlan was not known as enjoying the best of spells at his first team in Europe, Man Utd, but he did score the odd important goal and against top teams.
However, his last minute winner against the Blues in the Premier League helped keep the Red Devils in the title race and they went on to lift the trophy at the end of the season. Forlan was incidentally set up by another Old Trafford flop Juan Sebastian Veron.
Fletcher’s header to end Chelsea’s 40-game unbeaten run (2005)
Man Utd have made a habit of ending huge runs by other English clubs, having also halted Arsenal’s record-breaking 49 matches without a loss, and they did so to Chelsea too while Mourinho was boss.
Darren Fletcher’s superb looping header over Petr Cech and John Terry in the first-half that day in 2005 ensured a 1-0 victory. Chelsea’s 40-match unbeaten run thus ended at Old Trafford.
Drogba’s winner at first-ever new Wembley meeting (2007)
Wembley’s reconstruction was finally complete in 2007, and Chelsea and Manchester United were the lucky first teams to play there in an FA Cup final.
The Blues triumphed 1-0 thanks to the legendary Didier Drogba’s extra-time winner, which handed Mourinho his last trophy during his first spell with the west Londoners.
Terry’s penalty slip in CL final (2008)
Perhaps the most famous of all moments between these two teams is in the 2008 Champions League final, when it went down to the wire with a penalty shootout.
Chelsea looked set to lift their first European Cup with Terry just needing to convert, but the skipper instead slipped and hit the post. The rest of course is history…
Torres’ open net miss (2011)
Like Forlan for Man Utd, Fernando Torres was an unlikely flop with Chelsea. One of his worst moments for his former club came against the Red Devils when he somehow missed the target despite doing all the hard work and rounding David de Gea to leave an empty net at his disposal.
The Spaniard had in fact netted earlier in the match to put his side 3-1 down, but another strike would’ve put his side within reach of at least grabbing a late point.
Chicharito’s face goal on debut (2010)
After signing in the summer of 2010, Javier Hernandez was hoping to leave his mark early on in his Man Utd career in the Community Shield for his competitive debut.
He managed to do that metaphorically by scoring and literally by kicking the ball onto his face, but he certainly didn’t mind as it helped the Red Devils to a 3-1 victory.
Man Utd’s comeback from 3-0 down (2012)
Most recently of our chosen memorable events, Man Utd did the seemingly impossible by coming back from 3-0 down at Stamford Bridge after 50 minutes to claim a point.
Hernandez was again on target to secure the draw, after Wayne Rooney’s double. A share of the spoils on Sunday is priced at 9/4 with Coral.
